okay, I am NOT trying to breed my budgies, so please do not get me wrong. I have 4 budgies and I have them in 2 seperate cages because they do not get along with each other. I have a male & female in each cage, with NO breeding box.

All of a sudden, today as a matter of fact, one of my females started kicking the food from the food dish, I have not seen them breed, but there has been days when they were left alone, after I fed them, so I cannot say if they bred or not. I am unsure, but they have been all lovey dovey towards one another here lately and I have seen him feeding her.

Is there a possabilty that she may be with eggs? If so, what can I do? I am NOT an animal killer, so I cannot distroy the eggs at all. I don't have that kind of heart. If she is with eggs, how can I tell? I put another dish with food in the cage so they can have food.

 

Someone please let me know something ASAP.

Budgies often indulge in "recreational budgie sex" ....if you ever see this happen it does NOT mean eggs. Eggs only happen when they think they have a place to lay them and raise babies. It would be a good time to rearrange the bird cage. Some bird have been known to lay eggs in a food dish, so maybe change her food dish for a seed dispenser or something.

But budgie sex doesn't automatically mean...."pregnancy" or eggs.

okay, I rearranged the cage. But as soon as I finished and closed the cage up, she jumped in the food dish and started kicking the food out again. I have tried one of those seed dispensers with them before and they won't use it, so that is a no-go.I can't seperate them because the males don't get along and the females don't get along. That is why I seperated them in the fist place. I have only the 2 cages and I can't afford to get another cage right now because my husband just had surgery and our money is pretty tight.Any other suggestions?Thank you,Cherokee

She may try and lay eggs somewhere, if she is so inclined however this may not be what is happening here this time. What makes you think this is her efforts to lay an egg ? I would just change her cage around a bit and make it more interesting to her as a fun place not as a nesting place.

She is out of the food dish, but the male is checking it out now, She keeps going to it though. If she is with egg, I will not lie I am really worried because I have never bred budgies before. Can you please tell me what to expect and what I can do?

I wouldn't worry about it so much. If you see an egg, there's really no way for her to sit on it properly without a nesting box. Some females will even lay eggs when they're alone!

 

The behaviour you see could be just a new game she's figured out. Maybe try a new toy?

It may be an attempt to breed using her food dish as a nest as Canaries will do that if not provided with a nest, but as others have said it may be just play. I use some small plastic dishes in my aviary & yesterday I saw from outside the aviary that one bird was running around with the dish on it’s back like a tortoise, I have seen birds trap themselves under dishes, but before I got inside to do anything it was out from under it & I think it had just decided that it was a good game. Budgies are quite intelligent & will fill their life with activity wherever possible. If it’s an attempt to breed there is little you can do, except change things around as others have already suggested, if it lays eggs I doubt under the circumstance they will be incubated successfully. Any way you can just remove them, don’t let it worry you too much. It’s in there nature to breed under good conditions so it’s hard to stop them if they want to, I have had Cockatiels lay & raise Babies in the corner of the aviary, on the floor if not given nest boxes.

I've had hens dig away at the seed dish for weeks on end, moving it and adding a small shallow dish on the ground plus adding and swapping toys helped them lose the behaviour, even adding a branch of fresh leaves helped as a distraction. Hen will lay an egg from the perch if there isn't anywhere for them to lay.

Some birds have strange hobbies, like some humans…(Laughing out loud)…I had one hen in an aviary, every time I went near the aviary I would hear this loud “twanging” noise, I found out this one hen sat on a rail in the aviary “twanging” on the aviary wire, every time I went there she was at it, how long each day she did it I don’t know.
