What Mutation Is Rainbow?

Featured Replies

Posted

I named him Rainbow because he reminds me of a rainbow. But at the time I didn't know there are actually rainbow budgies. I don't think he is one, but what mutation is he? I'm not sure if I asked about him before, sorry if I did, but I can't find the post. So could you tell me, please?

I don't have a better photo of him then this, maybe later. But he has green and also blue on him. I would like to breed him sometime later, what mutation would you breed him with to get nice babies?

Thanks a lot :)

He looks a bit like my Harley who I am hoping to have babies from at the moment :) Harley is a Yellow face type 2 skyblue opaline (so I was recently informed) :)

Hiya,

well done Sunnie. He is a yellow face type 2 skyblue (maybe cobalt - blues dont photograph well) opaline budgie. In the YF2 the yellow 'bleeds' into the blue turning it green.

okay, thank you guys  I didn't think he is skyblue, his blue looks darker. But maybe he is. I will try to get better picture :) Any ideas on what hen (mutation) would be interesting to pair him with?

How would you describe a rainbow budgie?

Thanks :D

Zebra I agree he looks cobalt his cheek patches are pretty dark the rest I agree with very pretty

Zebra, the true Rainbow Budgie is an YF2 Blue Opaline Clearwing. To get from him to a Clearwing, with Clearwing being Recessive would take some time, but if you wanted to mate him with a Blue series Spangle hen, you could get some birds that look very similar to Rainbows. Here is a picture of one of my birds that looks pretty much like a Rainbow. Spangle being Dominant you could get one in the first batch if your lucky. If the hen was a YF2 Spangle the chances would be even higher...this bird is a YF2 Sky Blue Spangle.

Could I just ask what's the difference - type 2 and type 1? I was looking for it, but cannot find it. If you have a photo of YF2 sky blue spangle, would you please post it :P ?

Thanks a lot

A Type 1 is when the yellow is restricted to the face only.

A Type 2 is when the yellow is on the face will bleed in to the body and sometimes can turn the bird completely green. The Type 2 variation usually shows up during the first molt and can increase as the bird continues to molt.

Here are examples of YF birds from our FAQ section..you may find the mutation you are looking for. Members YF Budgies

Zebra your YF & mine are both examples of the YF2 where the Green bleeds into the Blue chest…YF1 I think seem to be more rare.

okay, thanks a lot :) I was looking in the "members YF Budgies" before, but I didn't see the difference. I think I get it now

This is not a Rainbow, it´s a Spangle. A Rainbow is a Clearwing.

Norm was not claiming it to be a true rainbow just looking very similar to a rainbow and being a spangle easier to breed , he mentions earlier in his post that a true rainbow comes from a combination including clearwing so its not techically correct but looks very similar to the true item.

I would be happy with any color similar to a rainbow - I just like them. I don't think I would even know if I had a true rainbow  :bluebudgie:

I'm looking for a YF2 blue spangle hen, but no luck so far -_- . I've seen a nice YF violet male yesterday - but that's not what I'm looking for, is it :(Laughing out loud):

I found some breeders in my area, so I will see if I can find a nice girl for my Rainbow boy. My only problem is that I have no idea how they call this color in czech  , so I have to guess :)

I will let you know guys if I get lucky and find a nice girl for him :D

This is a picture of the type of bird you need to look for Zebra. It's an Opaline Spangle & maybe it's YF too...the colours not too strong so can't tell for sure.

Sorry Aly I just noticed to late that it's one of my old photos before I learnt how to resize them...smack on the knucles.

 No problem, Norm

Thanks a lot for the picture Norm, I'm just trying to explaing to one breeder what does the YF blue spangle actually looks like :( . I found the czech name for it on a budgie show website, but not many breeders here actually know what mutations they have. Lots of them call them blue, green, yellow,... So it might take me a long time to find this budgie ^_^

I found a guy near me who is selling some budgies. I described to him what budgie I'm looking for and he sent me these photos.

The budgie in the first picture looks female to me, and YF skyblue opaline maybe. It doesn't look like a spangle. The second is blurry, but looks female YF skyblue opaline as well. Maybe it's the same bird :hap:

I think I will visit him and have a look at his birds :D

The first one looks like an YF2 Opaline Sky Blue…probably Grey wing. The second one may be a Clear wing with strong wing markings, both look like hens to me. And you would have to wait quite a while for them to breed as both are quite young.

Thanks Norm, yes I know, I'm planing to wait - I'm not in hurry to breed :budgiedance:

Also if I’m right about the colours of those birds, both Grey wing & Clearwing would be Recessive to your Normal Opaline cock, unless he was split to the same mutation, if he isn’t split for them any chicks would carry the Normal black wing pattern of the father.

I don't know his parents, so will have to wait and see. I'm going to the guy on sunday. Maybe he has the type I'm looking for, I will have a look :D

I went to the breeder on sunday. I was a bit disappointed  . His birds looked okay, but the aviaries were small, dirty, he is colony breeding with tiels in the same aviary. And I think it's a bit cold here to still have them outside with no roof and no shelter. He was a young boy and I felt like telling him what I think but I know it's quite normal here - for lots of people budgies are not as cool as the big parrots (I guess it's because they are very cheap here) :)

And he actually had two of his aviaries in a pig stable - very smelly and I think the smell must be toxic for birds.

But after he caught the budgie I went to look at (the budgie was outside), I felt sorry for her and bought her (she looks healthy, only her back toes are not 100% straight). She is in a quarantine and I will be watching her closely. But I don't think I'm going to breed her.

He had some nice YF blue spangle babies (still in a box), they were pieds I think. But he is going to send me a pictures of them when they're older and if they look healthy and one of them is a female, I might buy one more bird from him (as I cannot find YF blue spangle anywhere). But no more :( .

This is the girl I got

BudgieToBuy2.jpg

If you could take a clearer picture of it Zebra would be good, as hard to tell what wing pattern it has from that.
