I was just checking out one of the local pet shops today, as I always do & got a pleasant surprise, so I ended coming home with yet another two Budgies, this Opaline cock & below a what I think is a nice Light Green normal hen.

What do you guys think?

I think you've got 2 more beautiful birds Norm

gorgeous birds norm, i love the opaline cock!!! he's gorgeous... the others too fluffy for me :( but still a gorgeous girl congrats on your finds :D

Yes she is sort of fluffy Libby & I myself aren’t too taken by too much feather, but I’m sort of getting sucked in a little by mixing with show type breeders & their desires for long feathered birds…she is a little more fluffy, as the poor thing was I think trying to get some sleep when I hit them with the flash…(Laughing out loud)…

I think she has pretty long, what they call directional feathers especially on the head, something I’m hoping to breed into my birds without going too far I hope.

Beautiful birds Norm !! I would have bought them too. The blue cock has a great clear area on his back...better than most opalines I have seen lately. Good job :D

Yes Kaz most of my smaller Australian type Opalines have pretty clear V's but the British types seem to carry lots of barring & fleck don't they.

Thanks guys for your nice comments.

By the way the Opaline has a local club ring so I will be able to find out his breeder, but the Green hen doesn't, maybe it's been removed, wish me luck most of the best birds I have been able to get hold of...the real good looking ones have been bad luck so far with infertile egg etc...I guess there's always a reason why a good looking bird ends up in a pet shop...sob.

gorgeous you don't see that in our pet shops

the hen I love the way the violet hue is on her neck she is a beauty.

before you know it you will be used to all the feathers and changes

I remember getting Merlin thinking Pretty was so much handsomer with Merlin big head and feet now I just love the show look on many budgies.

Yes Elly...is it education or ...brainwashing...(Laughing out loud).

The only problem Norm, when you see a good type budgie,in a pet shop. There is a

fair chance its there for a good reason. How old is it Norm, ring colour?

I hope he fires up for you.The hen may of had the ring cut off. Some breeders do that. :D

Hi Norm,

you are getting some great birds for your aviary. I love them both.

Feathers.

Some birds just end up in the petshops because a breeder may not use them past the age of 2 years Norm. Could be simply that and I hope they work out for you. Some of my cheaper budgies have turned out to be little rippers :D

Yeah thanks Kaz, these only cost me $16...we still get birds $15 to $16 in the pet shops here...I saw your comments on another post.

Yes Macka the cocks not too bad, it's an 04 ring...hen might be old...looks okay still, but the breeding box will tell.

Gorgeous looking birds :) As someone else said, we dont get birds like that here in our petshops either. Just the ordinary budgie in a pet shop here can go for $25. Bird dealers are a bit cheaper.

Wow. Havent seen them that price in forever. Makes you think how much the petshops pay for them then to still make a profit :)

Mostly they pay about half...you pay double what they give...as always the producer takes all the risks & then the middle man/women makes the killing. I have had some petshop owner cry to me how much it costs her to feed them before she sells them. What do they think it costs us to keep the pair for at least a year. They only sometime have the bird a few minutes, as I have sold birds & they were sold already before I left the shop.

Not this Sunday but the next 28th I’m going to a show in the Hunter Valley with a friend, I will keep some money just in case I see one or two exceptional birds for sale, but I must slow down, for awhile until my young ones have moulted & I can cull some, as they are going through plenty of seed these days.

Norm if you are going to the Hunter show at Maitland Show Ground make yourself known to the Fat Fella at the BBQ , I'm usually pretty busy there but it will be good to say hello . Bubbles (David) We usually get birds from the Newcastle Club as well as our own with others coming from all over the state in excess of 400 birds being exibited we hope.

PS : there are usually some birds from the exibitors for sale but you never know until they show up.
