A New Mutation "dusk".

Some pictures of my new “Dusk” Budgies I bought recently…they are a new mutation, bred in the Newcastle area of New South Wales by Paul McCusker in 1997. I don’t know much about them as yet. The two I bought are both males whose fathers were brothers. They have a lot of Lutinos in their pedigree. They are said to add a very strong Orange look to Lutinos. The breeder said they might be a colour adding mutation like Violet. The two I bought look similar to Grey Green or dark Olives, but there is a difference, they also seem to have some variation in the feathers on the breast. I have only seen photos of other colours. Once again because of flash the colour is not that true & has an even darker intensity.

The bottom one is the nicer looking bird, in my opinion.

Can I ask what the description of a dusk budgie? He is gorgeous to me though he looks like a olive budgie but I know there is a difference so please explain thanks Norm :D

The "dusk"is just a factor that is carried by a bird that modifies the birds colour. A bird carrieing the factor may be a light green according to its breeding but visually appears as a dark or greygreen . The factor is a colour modifier it usually darken or intensefies a budgies ground colour .

I have had limited experiance with these birds but this is how I understand the "dusk"factor to work . Hope this gives you some insight into what they are talking about .

I have a file on the topic of the dusk budgerigar if anyone would like a copy. :D

Absolutely stunning birds.

Bubbles thank you...

Kaz yes send to me, I would love to know how you can tell they are carrying the dusk gene.

I agree with Bubbles, he's from the Newcastle area & probably knows more about them than me.

Also from looking at my two birds, the feathers on the breast seem to vary in colour & intensity & see in that second picture, the flash has shown up some almost light green feathers, which are not noticeable in real life & some feathers are so dark green that they are almost black. I read the article that Kaz has & the original breeder says that they maybe Slates or Anthracites. I don’t think they are Anthracites, but maybe Slates, I just read an article on Slates & it say they are like Grey Greens, but with a Violet check patch instead of Grey & looking at my photos, mine have the Blue or Violet check patch. It says that Slates are sex linked, so as soon as I breed them I will find that out, as if it’s true of these birds, they should get hen “Dusks”.

hey norm, bringing up an old topic of yours... did you end up figuring out of these 'dusks' were the green form of a Slate and sex-linked?

Kaz, do you still have that article on the 'dusk'?

I spoke to the guy that I bought them from Ravengypsy & he seems pretty cluey on genetics & he said they are Dominant & Slates are Sexlinked, so they must be a different Mutation..

I mated the one that I think was the best looking to a hen in an aviary where I was breeding two pair, sadly the first batch was all clear & the hen had produced fertile eggs before, she went down again & so far one chick has hatched, but I wonder if it’s from the Dusk, as I saw him driving a young male in the aviary away from her when she came out of the nest, I will have to remove him. I will await hopefully that the chick is from the Dusk.

Not any more. My PC crashed and I lost it. But if Norm or Elly still have a copy could they forward it onto me so I can replace my copy please ?
