I congratulate you on wanting to take on the kind of work I would think it would be rare like a recuse for farm animals would be. I would contact the RSPCA in your area asking about how to go about it. You could simply start by taking in ones found or sent to them.

That is very nice of you that you want to help. I would love to do it too, but here shelters save dogs and cats and I can't find any with birds :)

Before you start rescue I believe you need to hook up with a RSCPA or a shelter first that works with birds as Nerwen said. That way when you do get started you have someone to work with. Another thing you can do which is what many shelters need are foster homes like Robin (Pheobe) does. She pulls alot of her fosters off of craigslist that are free and rehabs them or quarantines them until they can go to the rescue. Therefore the money for health care is on the rescue and you can enjoy fosters and helping out.

Rescues is very hard emotionally, finanically and more and it takes a very special person and you may be just that person. Those would be my first steps

You might also try your local government, and find out what you need to do permit-wise. Do you want to be a non-profit organization, or something else? Your local agencies will be able to give you all sorts of information about the options available to you, as well as what is required legally.

A rescue is a noble effort indeed. Good luck to you.

:ygbudgie:: Very admirable that you want to undertake this. If you live in my country, this venture would not be government funded and you would rely totally on donations, your own money and any that friends or your helpers would like to contribute. I do get a slightly cut rate at my avian vet but it's not a major saving.

I work with 3 rescue groups, a Wildlife one for which I have volunteered for ? 15 years, an avian rescue and small animal rescue for the last couple of years or so. When my dog passed away a couple of years ago, that gave me the incentive to help more birds as I only had a few when the love of my life was with me for 14 plus years died, he disliked birds as it took the attention away from him. My first rescue bird was Freddy the budgie, we think he was young, who was brought to the Wildlife Rescue (not supposed to deal with domestics) by a landlord whose tenant had departed and left him on a cold porch in a filthy cage in the middle of winter and theoretically should have been dead. Poor Fred was cataconic the first little while, started to sing, finally came out of his cage and was so happy!!! He enjoyed visiting the other budgies for a couple of hours and then, gentleman that he was, would return home. Sadly, he died of an endocrine disorder (we think) at the vet's, his beak just kept growing and growing.

I ended up, for whatever reason, I think it is fate, getting some rescue budgies, some rescue lovebirds, some rescue cockatiels and here I am. My boss from the bird rescue sometimes gets me to get urgent cases of whom she has been called or e-mailed about, sometimes people alert me, or we try to get FREE birds off the local internet classified along with another bird rescue. As well, people sometimes want to contribute cages, etc. which need to be picked up and sometimes their idea of cages is well, questionable but I have picked up some pretty good ones.

Picking up birds is yet another issue, I have picked up birds in great condition in wonderful cages, and sadly, birds in not so great condition in either filthy or unsuitable cages. I now have a plucking cockatiel here that was in a cage maybe suitable for one finch for the last 5 years, she makes it all worthwhile, I have got her stepping up, coming out of the cage and not plucking although she most likely will never be truly hand friendly and her wings have most likely partially atrophied.

And then there are the fund raising events, it's always the SAME people stepping up to the plate! I now am doing a public relations event in November as I have done twice in the spring with the same folks for my small animal rescue, people say they are GUNG HO and ready to help at the beginning but somehow just fade away..........volunteers can be very fickle! Best of LUCK and THANK YOU for caring! Oh an addendum, you have to spend TIME with your rescue birds, have spent an hour in the quarantine room and am now going back in....... :bluebudgie:

I would really like to see a special place the disabled budgies can go and have a great life, There are many and are often killed off for their nuisance value or you see them in the bottom of crowded cages in petshops and bird dealers.

:) That is a fantastic idea Kaz, as there are tons of budgies bred in their native country there, that would be awesome if there was just a place for the "special" ones amongst them. :D
