October 11, 200717 yr Good news Peg is making her recovery. I think female too, but you can never tell with variations in monitors and photos..........she a beautiful bird
October 13, 200717 yr Author Well, Peggy has lost her company as Mel has recovered and is now back in the aviary. The first thing she did was fly a little, land on and eat some corn, then some seed. I am pleased. If she flies, then goes straight to the food, she is obviously doing well. Just waiting for he rot meet up with Kim, then all will be good again.
October 29, 200717 yr Author Well, as I said in my last post, Mel is back in the aviary, and she is all good now. Very pleasing results there. Peggy is in a separate cage with her recovering leg. She has been to the vets a couple of times, bandages removed. The leg will never be the same, but she will not lose it. Scar tissue has formed so the leg is kind of locked in place. She can put weight on her foot, but she cannot bend her foot. She needs wider perches. The vet says she might end up an indoor bird. Not overly keen on this idea. I am going toget my fences replaced soon, and so the aviary will need to be temporarily moved to get access to the fences. This means that all my birds will go into a smaller aviary or holding cages. After this fencing happens, and all the birds go back in the aviary, Peggy might get a go in the aviary. I will watch her over a weekend. I think the aviary will suit her more as she can fly around more, and there are a lot of large branches in there she can perch upon.
October 29, 200717 yr I have a few "disabled" budgies in the general population in the aviaries and they all manage really well.
October 29, 200717 yr Author that is what I thought. I think the vet was being overcautious. It is a lot more effort moving the little cage in and out everyday. plus the fact that she gets scared when those damn honey eaters swoop down and attach themselves to her cage.
November 4, 200717 yr Author Well, Peggy is back in the aviary as of today. She seems to be a bit jittery, but I suppose she is just finding her feet - pardon the pun. she can balance on her damaged leg, and put weight on her foot, she just cannot really bend the foot, it is always outstretched flat, so she has trouble maintaining balance sometimes. She is yet to remember where the food and drink is, so once she does that i will be happier. I cannot see her getting picked on either. When she has been balancing in a good position and another bird has come over trying to get her to move, she has clearly told them no, and has demonstrated she will fight to defend herself. Mel is back to normal. There is a big moult going on in the aviary at the moment, and a few birds have lost their longest tail feathers. First time I saw them i went - oh no, French moult - but really it was just stupid panic on my behalf. All will end up in smaller cages soon, temporarily, and then breeding might begin anew. Green birds are the order of this breeding season I think.
