Posted January 13, 200520 yr I weighed my budgie today and he weighs 55 kg. How much should a healthy budgie weigh? He hatched 30th september and is very active and has a healthy diet.
January 13, 200520 yr In one of the books ive got it says all budgies vary but the average weight is about 40 grammes (1.4oz) not sure if this is any help.
January 14, 200520 yr okay well a regular pet one should wiegh between 30 and 4 grams. not kg. (Laughing out loud). im not sure about english/show type budgies. sry.
January 14, 200520 yr My budgie weighs 33 grams, and the vet said that that's pretty light. She's not unhealthy-skinny, but she's light. I think yours might be a little 'overweight', but maybe it's just a bigger bird.
January 14, 200520 yr "American" budgies should average about 28-33 grams, and I'm guessing exhibition budgerigars about 50-55 grams.
January 14, 200520 yr thanks for the replies. I think i can render my budgie clinically obese!!!! He doesn't look fat though and he has the run of the house all day unless i go out. I only give him millet once a week because i read that that can cause obesity.
January 14, 200520 yr by the way - sorry for posting this on the budgie pictures section Nerwen!!! I wasn't thinking.
January 15, 200520 yr American Budgie? Isnt that the same thing as just budgie? Isnt it correct to say: Australian Budgie (as that is where budgies are really from also wild budgies) Show/exhibition budgie (budgies put into shows and stuff) English budgie (different colours due to the climate) I dont believe there is such thing as an Amercian Budgie. ?
January 15, 200520 yr sheesh here we go again. as far as i know, american is simply the smaller pet variety we have HERE IN AMERICA. THE ENGLISH BUDGIES JUST ARENT AS COMMON HERER (AT LEAST I HAVENT SEEN MANY). AND YES I AGREE 28-33 SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT. IM NOT SURE WHERE 42 GRAMS CAME FROM... edit: whoa sorry bout the shouting! chiisai landed on the caps lock. hehehe Edited January 15, 200520 yr by oscarchik101
January 15, 200520 yr Hi oscarchik101-I THIOUGHT YOU WERE GETTING REALLY HET UP THERE! Julie Edited January 15, 200520 yr by Julie
January 15, 200520 yr yeah my vet said that the average weight is just a little more than a packet of crisps, so between 28 and 33 grams sounds right to me.
January 15, 200520 yr well it looks like my budgie is a fatty then. I'm sure it isn't an exhibition budgie. Whats the difference between one of those and normal budgie?
January 15, 200520 yr how do you tell an exhibition budgie from a normal budgie Hath? Mine looks like a budgie to me (Laughing out loud)
January 15, 200520 yr have a look here http://www.sweeting-budgerigars.co.uk/ look under special birds,2003 show team and freinds birds some impressive pictures of show birds
January 15, 200520 yr oh my!!! those hair styles. One of them looked like Rod Stewart!!! Mine is a normal budgie so he must just be over weight. I can't understand why though because he gets a lot of exercise. He is flying around the house most of the day.
January 26, 200520 yr My budgie is about 42grams... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> my budgie weighs exactly 42 grams. I'm not positive exactly what kind of budgie he is, but my vet said that for him 42 is exactly the average and healthy weight of a budgie- whatever kind of budgie she was refering to...
January 26, 200520 yr thanks for the replies. I think i can render my budgie clinically obese!!!! He doesn't look fat though and he has the run of the house all day unless i go out. I only give him millet once a week because i read that that can cause obesity. I have a few that could use a little more exercise too. :bluebudgie: They have seemed to naturally have slimmed down a little since they eat more pellets. Do you measure his food, or does he just have a full bowl all the time?

I fill his bowls everyday but he eats very little. He mainly eats at night before retiring to his swing for bedtime. I only allow him to have spray of millet on saturdays and he has plent of fresh veg during the week. I have become quite concerned about his weight. He looks plump (but very cuddly). My friend came today and remarked on how podgy he was. I find myself weighing him everyday. He is now down to 50g. With everyone saying that their budgies are 42g/37g etc im obsessed. I don't want him to be fat because i have heard it can lead to a shorter life span.

January 27, 200520 yr when i fed seed i put a table spoon and a teaspoon for two of them, but if yours is bigger than american/pet types i would say about 1 tablespoon a day. i've also heard you can give celery tops becaused they are mostly water, the bird mentally feels it has eaten enough, so it will cut down on eating. i've never tried this, but i've hear it from several people and magazines.
