Posted January 13, 200520 yr A little tip! Dont use the water pots provided with the cage for young budgies. I bought my cage like most do from a pet shop with everything included, set it all up and then bought the budgie. While i was doing the school run she fell in and drowned! So best advice i can give is to buy a gravity fed water pot and attach it to the cage and just use the extra provided pot as another source of food.
January 14, 200520 yr Yes the same thing happened to mine, but fortunately I was watching at the time so managed to get him out unharmed. Julie
January 14, 200520 yr What I dont understand is when there is an obvious problem how come there are no standards agencys asking for the product to be re-designed? Are we as pet keepers / budgie breeders failing the system by not reporting back to the shops what is happening with dangerous products? Chris
January 14, 200520 yr Chris, Have been into the shop and complained and they have given me the manufacturers address to complain to. Will let you know of any progress. Sal.
January 14, 200520 yr Thats great to hear Sally, I hope I dont go and buy one not knowing about the dangers... Which type was it? Thanks, Chris
January 14, 200520 yr I sent a complaint to Ferplast to alert them of the problem and apparently the cage I bought was missing a water bottle that should have been with it. Ferplast said that the two pots that came with it should be used for seed only.I still think that this should be pointed out on the cages themselves as I naturally presumed one pot was for water and one for seed. Julie
January 14, 200520 yr Chris, I'll get hubby to take a photo and post it on here for you when he gets home from work later. Julie, I dont think they can try to blame it on the shop this time, it was a starter kit with full listing of the contents and what they were for so hopefully we can get them to change it in future. Sal.
January 25, 200520 yr i invested in a stainles steel bowl that hangs on the side of the cadge, n put pellets in one of the built in feeder pots and seeds in the other. Claire xXx
January 31, 200520 yr Hmmmmm...... A principle I always adopt is to try and recreate the wild (even if they are a few generations distant from original Australian birds). Now - where do they get water in the wild? I assume green shoots (when available) and from puddles after rain. I also read that budgies can - at a pinch - go three weeks without water - in the wild. Now I am not suggesting you give them muddy water only occasionally but I think on occassion we take things too far. Mine get green shoots (which they devour) and a simple "rock" bowl (really cast resin) sold for reptile cages. A close approximation of a hollow in the ground which might contain water. I keep a half inch of water in it. They can walk around in it without drowning and bathe in it. They do both. They ignore the inverted water holder...... and yes - I do change the water daily.
February 1, 200520 yr i use water bottles because my cage it tall instead of wide (i wish it were both!!) so there is no room on the floor for things like that chiisai has this annoying habit of dropping things in the water dish for fun, so thats yet another reason i use bottles. plus the water stays cleaner and its good in the car (to and from the vet mostly)
February 4, 200520 yr and its good in the car (to and from the vet mostly) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Which implies that you also take your budgie for rides in the car - just for fun! :wine Don't worry - I won't tell - my cat thinks she is a dog and jumps in the car every day to go for a ride.
