Help The Babys

When the babys are feathered in the nest and about a week from leaving the nest box , put in the box some millet sprays this will be eaten by the parents and the young will pick at it and start to eat the sprays, this will help them make an easier switch to eating for themselves and also to some burden from the parents , which will help if you are going for a second round.

Once the chicks have left the nest place in some green seeding grasses the soft sweet seeds will be rellished by the young and the parents keeping both in good condition and helping the transition to eating for themselves.

In the bottom of the cage i place a dish and in it i put a spoon full of budgie starter a soft dry food that i feed the parents while breeding the young chicks soon reconise the smell and start to eat it , its great for their energy levels and nutrition.

Lastly i put in the water a multi vitamin to help these young in the first weeks by themselves, you have to admit this is a big step for them and highly stressful so if we can reduce the stress and make the transition smooth will will have happy healthy budgies and hopefully a couple of potential show winners. :P

Not that I am interested in showing budgies and this is my first time breeding, but I found your tips very intereseting and helpful. I am going to start by putting in a bit of millet in both my almost fledged babies boxes tomorrow. Thanks again for the great ideas :P

Hi sunnie Showing is just another part of the wonderful world of budgerigars , its not for everyone .

I firstly love the little birds , love watching them looking after them and breeding them its an awsome hobby, ive had budgies since i was ten and twenty years later ive still got them , but now i choose to have and breed the show type as im also interested in the personal side to the hobby and thats meeting new people at shows or at their avaries and sharing the same interests its a great side to the hobby and maybe one day you may try it too.

But i always say if your birds are happy you will be happy and happiness comes first everything else comes after that.

Goodluck and may your birds make you happy.

Thanks for your reply lonebudgie. I know showing is not for everyone, and who knows, I might even go that road one day! I had a budgie when I was a teenager and not a very responsible teenager and my bird interest stopped there. Recently, my fiance has gotten me into the world of birds and I adore them and Im having so much fun, learning and loving. I also have a pair of sun conures (aviary birds), an indoor hand reared young quaker and a pair of turquosine parrots. I love all birds, but at the moment, its the budgies that are taking most of my time with the excitement of learning and breeding for the first time. I have two budgie aviaries, one for my "favourite" 2 pair, and the other has about 27 budgies in it that came with the aviary when we bought it. I have eggs and babies hatching in there too, but most of them will probably stay aviary babies, while I am hand taming as many as I can manage without stressing me or them. I like being interactive as much as I can be with the birds, so I guess hand taming gives me a lot of pleasure (so far) :P
