Posted September 22, 200717 yr hi everyone. my name is kate, i am new to this forum. i have had budgies for a few years now and decided to have a go at breeding. i currently have 4 pairs in breeding cabinets (which i had made a few months ago by a friend). cabinet 1 currently has one egg (i fostered out 2 of her eggs to other hens as she ate the first two but she has settled down now with this one). she is due to lay another egg tomorrow. the hen in cabinet two is sitting on 7 eggs (including one that i fostered out from cab 1). she laid the 7th this morning. cabinet 3 hen is sitting on 2 eggs (one fostered and one her own, by the look of it this is all she is going to have!!) finally cabinet 4 has..... nothing and i have a feeling that it will stay this way.... the first of the eggs is due to hatch on the 4th of october (if i have added it up right) so fingers crossed!!!!! i will add some pictures of my setup and pairs in the morning, perhaps someone can tell me what types i have. i know the hen in cab 2 is a lacewing (white) and i think one of the males is a dominant pied. anyway i will add some pictures tomorrow and fingers crossed i will have some bubby budgies soon!

September 22, 200717 yr Welcome to the site Kate. I ditto all that Kaz said about asking for help and the love of pictures part Good luck with your eggs.
September 23, 200717 yr Author hey everyone! i have finally had a minute to take some pictures of my breeding pairs. my camera isnt the best so some of the pictures might be a bit iffy. pair 1: the colouring on this picture really doesnt do any justice for the male. he is a real vibrant purple (like the purple male in the top banner for this site). would you say the hen is type 2 yellowface? http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc160/b...rl/P9240037.jpg pair 2: I know the hen is a lacewing, but what about the male? http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc160/b...rl/P9240041.jpg pair 3: is the hen opaline and the male dominant pied http ://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc160/b...l/P9240042.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc160/b...rl/P9240047.jpg pair 4: is the male a normal skyblue and the hen a recessive pied? http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc160/b...rl/P9240045.jpg since my last post we now have 2 eggs from pair 1, pair 2 still has seven (including one fostered, she is due to lay another today but i am hoping 7 will satisfy her), pair 3 now has 3 eggs (including one fostered), and pair four.... well they like to eat and sleep (Laughing out loud). let me know if more pictures are needed to determine the types of my budgies! what types of bubs do you think pair 1 will have??? kate
September 24, 200717 yr Hi Kate and welcome to the Forum as for your pairs I will take a stab at it I think pair 1 is Violet cobalt cock and yellow face 2 hen Pair 2 is I think a dominant pied cock and as you said lace wing hen but I don't know much about lace wings Pair 3 is I think a Recessive Danish Pied cock and Opaline dominant pied hen Pair 4 is sky blue cock and dominant pied hen Good luck with your breeding Kate
September 24, 200717 yr Some nice birds there Kate Pair 1 Visual Violet normal Cock (stating violet since you have spoken of a more violet colour which is hard to get in pictures) x Yellowface type 1 normal hen ( I can't seen any bleed of yellow in the body area making a green colour) what types of bubs do you think pair 1 will have??? 25% Yellowface normals 25% Yellowface violet normals 25% Blue normals 25% Violet normals Pair 2 Green Dominant Pied cock x Lacewing Pair 3 Green Pied Cock x Green Opaline Dominant pied hen I can't really tell with the male a back shot would help. I can see the pink cere which is a sign of a recessive pied, however if the male as in iris ring then he would be a dominant pied. Pair 4 Skyblue normal cock x dominant pied hen (skyblue or cobalt)
September 24, 200717 yr Author thanks for the replys everyone! i will have a look at his eyes tomorrow and will keep this link updated with any bubs we get! ta, kate
October 3, 200717 yr Author hey everyone, heres a bit of an update. bubs are due to start hatching over the next few days. cab 1 hen is currently sitting on 7 eggs, cab 2 is sitting on 9 (she did have 10 but one had a crack in it so i removed it), cab 3 is sitting on 4 eggs. i broke up pair 4 as there wasnt anything happening but so far i think everything is going pretty good. i have had a go at candleing the eggs and it looks as though quite a few are fertile (which was a surprise from pair one) fingers crossed we will have some babies soon! P.s. what is a good candleing torch to get?????
October 4, 200717 yr Author hey everyone i have news!!! i came home from work today and one of the babies was hatching!! i had to go out for a bit and when i got home he was out and wriggling around (they are top heavy (Laughing out loud) and look like they are trying to do handstands!)he is also a little song bird (chirp chirp chirp). looks as though mum has fed him as it looks like food is in his crop... i'm so excited!!! i will add some pics on the weekend when i get a chance!lets hope all goes well..
October 10, 200717 yr Author hi everyone! okay, i have been very busy the past few days so havent as yet had a chance for pictures (they still look like little naked dinosaurs anyway). so far we have 5 baby budgies between 2 nestboxes!!!! 2 of them hatched this morning. i was actually quite suprised because the bub in cabinent 1 wasnt suppose to hatch until tomorrow, but i guess it is normal to have some early arrivals???? anyway, there are still 4 eggs to hatch in cab 1, 4 eggs in cab 2 and cabinet 3 has four eggs with the first due on the 13th. anyway, i will add some pictures when they start to feather up a bit. cheers! P.S. i decided i am not going to put leg rings on at this stage as i tried it on the eldest yesterday and he wiggled around so much that i thought i was going to break his little toes... following this, i actually got it on and what do you know, i come out a few hours later and he/ she has kicked it off.i think i will get the leg rings that you clamp on???
October 10, 200717 yr (Laughing out loud) Ringing a budgie should be done around day 5-6 or even 7 if the smaller pet size birds. Close hatching is common for the first few as the hens might not have started to brooding correctly until egg 3. Good to hear that they are hatching
October 11, 200717 yr Author hi everyone. this afternoon i was checking on all the bubs and i realised.... the eldest bub in cabinet 1 does not have the dark eyes like all the others. is this a sign of cinnamon or ino? (refer to the pics of parents from an earlier post). thanks, kate
October 12, 200717 yr Author hi everyone. just thought i would update the hatchlings (only just finished work so no pics as yet). we had 3 bubs hatch today (one in each nest box, one that was a day late, one on time and one a day early). that makes 3 for cab 1, 4 for cab 2 and 1 for cab 3. i am very surprised by how many have hatched as this is my first go at breeding... cheers
October 12, 200717 yr All sounds busy at your place Kate BY the way, if you cant source a good candling torch, PM me for details and I should be able to get you a very good flexi torch through our club if you want
October 13, 200717 yr Author hey everyone. i managed to take a few quick pictures this arvo after cleaning out the nest boxes. these pics arent fantastic, they are a bit blurred, i will need to take some more in better daylight tomorrow. anyway, most of the bubs except one still look like little aliens anyway (Laughing out loud). the eldest of the bubs (from cabient 2) looks like he/she is going to have alot of white but it looks like there are some black markings coming though on the head and wings. the youngest of all the bubs (one of the three that hatched yesterday) im a bit concerned about as it doesnt seem to be being fed enough (i have only seen its crop with food in it twice and it wasnt anywhere as near as full as the other 2 new hatchlings.. i was thinking of getting some hand rearing formula just to top him/her up until the parents feed it more. does anyone know of a good brand to get?let me know please! ta, katehere are the picseldest bub http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA130119.jpgbubs in cabinet 1http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA130112.jpgbubs in cab 1 againhttp://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA130111.jpgP.S.Kaz, thanks for the info, i did manage to get a little light from kmart that i will make do with for now though!
October 13, 200717 yr does anyone know of a good brand to get?let me know please! I use Passwell's handraising mix. In an emergency if I havent got it and cannot get it in a hurry, I use Heinz Baby cereal...the multigrain one and add just a drop of calcivet and warm water :budgiedance: Edited October 13, 200717 yr by KAZ
October 13, 200717 yr Wow Kate your lot is breeding well. I just got my 4th baby hatch today. So I am so happy! I love looking at your photos. They look so cute!!! Have you got more hatched and do any have feathers yet?
October 13, 200717 yr Author thanks for the info Kaz, i will get both the baby food and hand rearing formula tomorrow morning. hi julie, im still in shock that i had even one hatch, let alone 8 (Laughing out loud)!!. there are 2 more due to hatch tomorrow, one for cab 1 and the other for cab 2. cab 3 still only has one bub, the second egg to hatch was infertile so we will have to wait a few more days for the next one. only the one bub has little bum fluff feathers so far (i think he/she will be a pied). all the others are still naked and jurrasic park in looks (Laughing out loud). I cant wait for their feathers to start coming through.... most of them hatch before i do the 'feeding rounds' in the morning, so its always a nice surprise.... some of the boxes are going to turn into mosh pits soon if all the eggs are fertile (especially in cabinet 2 as so far there are 4 bubs plus 3 more eggs to hatch (i fostered her last egg to cabinet 3 as, at that time she had laid 11 eggs and i thought that was a bit of an overload. since then however, some have been infertile and some were scrambled). i was hoping to get another lacewing from pair 2 but so far it doesnt look like i will. anyway, bubs are all nice and squirmish and squeeking for food, cheers, kate.hi again everyone (so soon (Laughing out loud)). i just went out to do my 'before bed check' and surprise surprise....... a somewhat early arrival in cabient 2 (Laughing out loud).... cabinet 2 now has 5 babies!!!!, my fingers are crossed that all goes well with these guys, i am very pleased! have a good night everyone! i certainly will (Laughing out loud). :parrot: kate.
October 13, 200717 yr aww little bubs :budgiedance: The oldest (in the first picture) is an opaline, who is the parents?
October 13, 200717 yr Author the parents are "pair 2" if you go back to one of my first posts i have links for each pair... i wouldnt have expected opaline... the male is dominant pied and the female lacewing... can opaline be masked by lacewing? on the other hand, one of the bubs in cabinet 1 (pair 1 parents) looks like it will have pinkish eyes (they dont have that deep black look that the others do, even though he/she hasnt opened them yet). what are the chances of this bub being ino????
October 13, 200717 yr Kate the only bird that can carry Opaline is the father, the Lacewing could also be Opaline, can you tell whether her wing pattern is Normal or Opaline? Both Opaline & Lacewing are sex-linked colours, if a female has a sex linked colour it shows, she can’t be split for it. But a male can be either a sex-linked colour or mask it, as in being split. If the chick in cabinet 1 is an INO the eyes will be real light pink, if they are only Plum type colour they could either be Recessive Pieds or Cinnamons.
October 13, 200717 yr Author thanks for the info norm, i cant tell if the female is opaline at the moment. she wont move more than an inch from the outside of the nestbox so it is very hard to get a look at her back. update on bubs: we have an early arrival!!! bub 2 from cabient 3 hatched this morning, a day ahead of schedule (Laughing out loud). you will see in the picture that i ended up moving the other bub (the one that wasnt being fed properly to me) to cabinet 2 just to get him/her though the night as i didnt have any hand rearing formula or baby food and i was a bit concerned. i plan on moving this bub back to its mum today as i will be home all day and can keep an eye on it, as well as its new sibling. still waiting for bub 4 in cabinet 1 to hatch, i can see the little cracks in the egg so it shouldnt be too far off. i have finally had a chance to take some decent pictures. i had a second attempt at putting leg rings on three of the bubs and so far so good, hopefully they wont kick them off! cabinet 1 bubs http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140121.jpg cabinet 1 bubs (see what i mean about the eldest having pinkish eyes???) http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140122.jpg Another cabinet 1 bub shot http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140127.jpg cabinet 2: 'budgie grouping' http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140144.jpg cabient 2: the youngsters http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140143.jpg cabient 2: 'the eldest' of the bubs http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140135.jpg AHHH its godzilla!!! http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140145.jpg the early arrival http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/mi...ck/PA140147.jpg
October 14, 200717 yr Author hi again everyone.... some good news: bub 4 in cabinet 1 has hatched! some bad news.... the little bubba that i was worried about because he/she wasnt being fed properly died this afternoon... i was upset because i have been trying to get it to take food from a syringe but without any success... the hen was fine incubating her eggs but wasnt so good with feeding the bubs. as a result i have removed the newest bub from cab 3 (who also hasnt as yet been fed) and put him/her in cabinet two, in an attempt to keep this one alive. i have put the parents back in the aviary. fingers crossed all goes well, hopefully the lacewing hen wont mind an extra mouth to feed! kate
