The ivermectin that is used on budgies is a diluted version of the product that is for other animals , I know that it is not the one used for cattle but not sure exactlly which one. Usually a Bird club with a products section will have the preparation diluted to the corret level and ready to use , contact a club in your area and they may be able to help although they may only be able to supply members .
September 21, 200717 yr Agree with everything Bubbles said. I use ivermectin...spot on for all diagnosed scaley face and for all new incoming birds. Ivermectin water soluble for their drinking water once a month through summer and every 3 months the rest of the year. I get the spot on from our avian vet and the drinking water one through our bird club. Any vet who doesnt know it is used for birds most likely isnt an avian or bird vet or may be living in the dark ages. Edited September 21, 200717 yr by KAZ
September 21, 200717 yr I use the cattle one & just spot it on, it works okay, but it's expensive if you only have a few birds, the smallest size I could get was about $80. It's not registered in Oz for birds, but an avian vet should be able to supply it.
September 22, 200717 yr I have had a few Scaley Face encounters, use some vaseline, apply it with a Q Tip and rub it gently over the area where the mites are. It plugs their burrows and they suffocate. That vet is probably not an avian vet.
September 22, 200717 yr The budgie that I had with scaley mites had 2 injections and it worked very well but I know that is not the preferred method amongst the members here of which many are in Australia. However, I do live in Canada so maybe that is normal protocol here.
September 24, 200717 yr I use ordinary Baby Oil once a day and gentally rub it in. The Mites hate it and it causes no problems
September 24, 200717 yr I use the Scale & Mite Remedy and it clears it up just fine - available from pet stores & produce stores.
