Posted January 10, 200520 yr I will soon be transporting a budgie from London to the North West by car. The journey is likely to take 3 hours. What sort of carrier will be suitable for a long journey like this? I've asked a pet shop and they told me a wooden nest box would do. But To be honest from experience they hardly know about the basics of animla care. No offence to those who run knowledgable outlets! I have seen wire carriers with fleecy covers, anyone know if they are any good? Would it need a perch? I'm assuming it should be kept quite dark to reduce stress. Thanks for any advice, Iz
January 11, 200520 yr im not 100% sure of the size but i think i has to be small so he cant flap around and hurt himself. as for the perch i dont thing so. and i would have guessed it would have to be dark to keep him calm. hope this helps a little. hopefull some one will be able to tell you for deffanet. ATD
January 11, 200520 yr I don't really know but I wondered about a shoebox with air holes punched in and something on floor to make it non-slip? Julie
January 11, 200520 yr a budgerigar nest box would be fine they travel a lot better in the dark and i mean complete dark not a cage with a jumper over it my show cages all have covers which stop most of the light
January 11, 200520 yr I took my budgie with me on vacation this christmas and it was a 7 hour journey by car (i would've like it better for him not having to do such a long journey but i had no other choice) i couldn't carry him in a really small place such as a shoebox cause imaging being trapped there for 7 hours so i got him a smaller cage that had some perches and he could move around, i covered the cage with a towel and just carried it the whole trip on my knees. we also made stops every hour or so so he could drink. At first he was kind of spooked but he eventually decided it wasnt that bad and chirped the whole way there
January 11, 200520 yr i have a little cardboard box with little air holes in the sides. it is very small so he cant flap around or anything, but it is only used for short trips to the vets. if you are going long distance, i agree with hath. nest boxes are not too big so are easy to transport. hope all goes well pixie
January 11, 200520 yr A cat travelling cage is meant to be good, and you can secure a perch in there quite low with a towel on the ground for grip and then just ensure the door is covered so its dark. We traveled my budgie an hour in its cage uncovered, and she had a ball! But Merlin prefers to be covered up.
