Posted September 13, 200717 yr Is this set up going to suit breeding or do we need to do something else? We are going to build some more breeding cages like the bottom one on the weekend. ">
September 13, 200717 yr Denise,Are you interested in joining a budgie club,The Geelong club meets, The 3rd Tuesday of the month. There is a budgie show at the show grounds this Saturday,if you are interested to come & have a look,From 9.30 to 13.00 What size are your breeding cages.
September 13, 200717 yr yep that'll do. I like the wire ones as they have a lot more perch space- the bottom one only seems to have the one perch. Reckon they'll be happy enough to breed for you though!!
September 13, 200717 yr I think the solid breeding cabinets are the best; they give the birds more security & less chance of draughts. With your wire ones it would be better for the birds if you had a perch at each end of the cage so that the birds can get maximum exercise flying to & fro. They seem to put out those perches that run from end to end on most of the cages these days, maybe because they think you can see the birds better, but in fact aren’t as good for the birds.
September 13, 200717 yr I agree with Norm plus chasing the hen from one branch to another is part of the mating/bonding behaviour. It would have been better (for easy of checking and cleaning) to have the boxes outside. I set mine up so the entrance is in line with one of the doors and hangs outside.

I am looking to get my aviary up and running by january '08 {have just put the concrete slab down}, I live on the Bellarine Peninsula, so Geelong would be a suitable meeting spot. I am interested in purchasing quality birds for my breeding program {blues, yellows, whites, no plain greens} and also finding out how to breed so that I don't end up with a cage full of green birds. For example, someone once told me that a pied male bred with an Albino female, both non-green birds, will ensure that the gene pool doesn't regress back to green, is this correct? Also, please let me know about meeting times in the Geelong area.-Kind Regards,Colmo

I know some pet shops don’t want Green birds, but some Green birds are beautiful…often the natural colour in birds are the most beautiful combination, but humans being what they are seem to want what’s not natural.
