Posted September 13, 200717 yr Hi, I have 6 pairs of Budgies now that have Eggs/or babies. I have noticed a few people on here mark there eggs, Can i ask what you use to mark them as I would like to get into this habit too or do you think its not necessary? Also I have Cards which I attach to my Breeding boxes to record eggs and hatchings from my pairs. I brought some small pegs to attach my cards to the boxes but these Pegs always Break. Can I ask what others do to attach their cards to their boxes? Thanks any ideas appreciated. Wayno
September 13, 200717 yr If you use the cards on each box then you might not have to worry about marking the eggs, I think Aly didn't bother when using cards. If you want to do so as an extra step then any water based non toxic pens work (such as crayloa (sp?) markers) I got mine from Woolies as a pack of ten for about a $1 I think. I've seen people use pin (as in corkboard pins) to put up the cards and I tried that with mine but they would go in the wood.
September 13, 200717 yr I use a card on the box, attached with a drawing pin and a clip holding the card and looped onto the pin. I dont mark eggs. I write down the egg dates as laid on the card, and for quick reference I also put yellow round stickers on the nestbox that tells me at a quick glance how many eggs in there. As each chick is laid it is marked both on the card and a date on the sticker. The reason I dont mark eggs is I prefer to handle eggs as little as possible, and when I candle the eggs and discard any that are NOT fertile, it seems pointless to have marked eggs anyway.
September 13, 200717 yr Author Kaz, Sounds good, Next time your out there would you be able to take a picture and show me exactly how you do it. Would be good to see, I was thinking of a plastic pocket attached with glue and slide the card into there but would have to make these to suit. September 13, 200717 yr Wayno,If your nest box is on the outside of the cage, you can pin it onto the front of the nest box, stick a little plastic envolope on the front & put the card in that.A peice of white board & write on it with a white board marker. :
September 13, 200717 yr what about the little clips you squeeze to open you get from the office/stationary shops- they are 100% metal. They work.- I just tend to write on the nestbox door with pencil- quick and easy, can be erased at the end too. Works best with smooth doors- so you may need some gloss (?) paint to paint them with if they arent already laminated

September 13, 200717 yr Author The Only Problem i See with those clips is that i have a small piece of timber attached to the door of the breeding box so it is easier to open. Thanks for all the ideas everyone I might go to Officeworks and see what i can find. September 14, 200717 yr Hi, this is the chart that I use for my breeding boxes... The only time I mark an egg now is if very occassionally I want to keep track of an egg that I foster to another hen. I use a pencil. Like Kaz, I prefer to not handle my eggs at all where possible. If I do I use one of the air drying anti bacterial hand washes first. Feathers.
September 14, 200717 yr I tried not marking eggs but it was a big problem. I throw out the eggs that are not fertile and knoowing which ones are laid when and are not fertile is impossible unless you mark them. Also when I foster eggs I need to know which egg is which. I have never had any issues with marking them. Here is my nest box card. You'll find it will print on a A5 paper.
September 15, 200717 yr Thanks for that Daz, I've saved a copy. I've been trying to download the Budgie Program but can't get past the first file. Scratch that, after 4 hours it's let me download the second file! Edited September 15, 200717 yr by karen
