Just a quick question

I have this pied budgie i have had for acouple of years.

It's cere, went a really dark crusty brown then acouple months later it had suddenly vanished!, Is she a he?.

You be the judge.

Dark crusty brown indicates its a she. The photo isnt clear enough to see the cere closely Shaun.

Hi shaunx, one way you could find out is to put it with another that you know is a male, then wait a while. If they start bonding, well... you get the picture, (I hope) :budgiedance: . But I would say, if it has had a brown cere, she IS a she.

And very friendly answers . "she" often feeds the other mothers alot thats why i was just interested in getting answers.

she sits on top of the breeding box like the other males.

Thats why i asked

She has the behaviour of a male budgie without the mating that i haven't witnessed so yeah

Very interesting Shaun...sounds like male behaviour. No wonder you need answers. Have you witnessed any mating behaviour at all ? Would you have a closer and clearer photo of the cere ?

in breeding condition a female budgie's cere will be crusty and brown

when they are coming out of breeding condition or not in condition females ceres can range from a whitish tan or tanish pink in a pied

 

everything sounds very normal

Since you have spoken about a brown crusty cere on this bird before would make me say you have a hen that is now out of condition for breeding.

What about the many gay budgies there are ?

In my quarantine cage there are 2 males, and 3 females.....the males have paired up. :(Laughing out loud):

 

From the photo the cere looks really smooth and pink, but a closer picture would be better. :bluebudgie: Smooth and pink would mean male, but if it is male, then it's cere should never have turned brown...

No Scaly face looks entirely different to a brown crusty cere. And scaly face does not fix itself somehow.

Yep true.

This is a picture of white and blue budgie we had that did have really bad scaly.

We had 2 treatments of dettol and cotton once per 9days, thats how he turned out

This picture was taken just alittle over 2 weeks after and 3days after the 2nd treatment

 

A Old bloke told me something about what Nerwen said about the cere changing colour back to pink flesh if not in breeding condition.

 

But yeah never took it on board

they're both males it's so hard to tell with Australian pied budgies

 

But smart breeders dont seem to have any trouble telling the difference

Male Ceres that Don't Change Pics

 

Above you can see a picture of a female and male in these different type of varieties.

 

Experience breeders can tell but even some birds fool them.

 

If it is a male and the cere turns brown this can indicate testicular cancer or a health issue. So if you are sure he is a he I would consider the health of the bird.
