Hi Julie,

I haven't had much luck with the second pair's chicks unfortunately. The first chick that started to hatch, didn't get out of the egg, so when the second one started to hatch, I helped that one out.... That was just before lunch time. I checked on it just before it got dark and mum had been feeding it, but by the next morning it had died.... Well the third egg hatched on it's own but I put it under another hen, maybe it'll have more luck with her!

Sandy

but I have no idea where the violet came from???

The violet comes from both parents...Dad is apparently a cinnamon violet and the mother is a violet DF dom pied :)

The parents of these chicks are the YF type1 & YF type 2 greywing dilute...???? How could that pair have a violet chick???

Sorry, I thought the Mum was the DF dom pied hen who is a violet. If the father is the one you have been calling the pastel violet or greywing dilute ....it would appear that the Dad is in fact a cinnamon violet. When cinnamon is involved the body colour of the bird appears sort of half strength in colour. If it were a greywing I would hazzard a guess that the body colour would be stronger or should be anyway. So, assuming the "pastel violet " you were referring to is actually a cinnamon violet...then that would account for these babies being violet and one seems to be cinnamon violet.

I have a cinnamon violet like the dad of yours. I will look for a photo for you :(

Here are some of mine. There is quite a variation between some cinnamon violets and also some greywing violets. Interesting. No wonder they are so hard to picture and depends on how your photos were taken...daylight and or flash ?

Hi Kaz,

No wrong dad!!! :(Laughing out loud): Mum is a YF type 1 and the dad is a YF type 2 greywing dilute....

Here's a photo of them both....

This is a picture of dad before his first moult.....

about 4 months old I think he was..... He's more like a lemon lime color now...

By The Way, I really like your birds.... Shame you live on the other side of the country!!! :)

Problem solved :) the Mum is a sky violet hen :(

Oh, okay.... Is that why she has that different color near the barring on the side of her neck?

Is it still possible that we can get chicks of the dad's color if we let these 2 breed again or is she a certain color that will mask his color each time?

I'd like to get more like him, so to do that, what color would I have to breed him to (other than another like him).....?

Yes...thats why you see violet on the side of her neck. A lot of sky violets are mistaken for cobalts. Sometimes on here, too, we deal with variances in peoples monitor colour and the light conditions of the photos that you and others have taken at times too. I have sky violets and like them very much for their intense colour so I recognise them quickly. Here is a very good article on them by peter Bergman

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/c.../violets01.html

read the part about sky violets

Our better experienced genetics buffs on here will tell you how to get some like the Dad. But when I had one a bit like yours ( the father ) I had to breed it to a similar one to get a nestful the same as Dad.

Cheers Kaz :(

:Gee,talk about riddles. On the other thread you was asking about, shifting birds

& you had more cocks then hens. The chicks could be from any number of birds.

Or is it just me thats, :) going on :(

Hi Macka,

yeah, the possibility is there I guess, but she does try to kill any other male that comes near her other than her hubby! :(Laughing out loud):

Hopefully we'll be able to get single breeding cages soon, but for the moment this is all we have! hehehe

Sandy

Sandy about getting some more birds like your cock bird, I think it’s some kind of Dilute, which means it’s Recessive, so it will be difficult to get another like it, unless you mate it with another bird similar to it’s self or to a bird split for Dilute.

Re your Cinnamon Violet chick or chicks…Kaz maybe correct that the hen is a Sky Blue Violet, but seeing you are breeding colony style I would put my bets on the Opaline Greywing Violet being Dad…maybe Mum has been straying…Budgie like a little variety you know…(Laughing out loud).

Macka was right it took me some time to read up on the whole post to work out who was who so hopefully my advise was right…phew…might be good to keep batches in separate posts.

Hi All,

I thought that I would send you all a photo of how these chicks have grown up. They are sooooo pretty!!

I can't wait to see their colors once they have gone through their first moult.
