Posted September 10, 200717 yr Hi Just wondering if someone can help, my budgie has not been his usual self. He is molting at the moment but it dosen't usually affect him this much. He is very lethargic and is sleeping much more than usual, the top of his head is quite red and looks very sore. He is usually very active, noisey and independant but there has been none of that the last few days. I am just worried about such a big chage in temperament and was wondering if it could be something a bit more serious. Any advise you can give would be great. Thanks
September 10, 200717 yr If you're worried then my advice is to see an avian vet. Lethargy is a sign of illness. So is a change in behaviour. Let us know what you decide.
September 10, 200717 yr As Bea says lethargy is a sign of illness but also some birds in moulting mode go a bit lethargic. A good check would be to check his bottom for signs of sticky and loose droppings...look for stained areas and also poop stuck to his vent. While you have him check him for reasonable body weight. See if he feels "light". Check his breastbone for evidence it is protruding ( or not ) . A breastbone where you can feel the bone easily as well as a lightweight budgie and a poopy bottom is very good reason to take him to the vet. Also a few budgies suffer pretty hard going through a moult. It's a good time to add some MOULTING AID to their food or water. But check him as I have suggested first and let us know.
September 11, 200717 yr as other's have mentioned, it would be best to take your budgie to an avian vet. also l noticed this is your first post, welcome to our forums.
September 11, 200717 yr Welcome to BBC and sorry this had to be your first post. As the others have said, sometimes budgies really feel out of sorts when they moult and some moults are worse than others. As your little guy seems quite NOT himself so it might be a good idea to get him checked out as we don't know your budgie and can't medical advice. Good Luck to you and your budgie.
September 11, 200717 yr Author Thanks to you all for getting back to me so quickly. We took Quasie off to the vet today and it seems he isn't all that well. The vet said that he was quite skinny and may have some kind of infection, She gave him a shot of vitamin B and a shot of antibiotics. We are going back each week for the next 6 weeks for antibiotic shots. He is now in his travel cage with the cover over and a hot water bottle between the wall and the cage to keep him warm, he is still quiet but we are hoping that he will come around soon. He has lots of water, fresh veggies and seed to try and entice him to eat a bit more. Once again thanks so much for your help. We have had Quasie for over 5 years now and he has never been ill like this before. I will let you all know how it goes.
September 11, 200717 yr Glad to hear he got some prompt attention and the best of everything in your care. You have no idea how many people ask for help and then say they cannot afford a vet....and the poor bird dies. Very disheartening. We will all pull for his complete recovery. Take care.......KAZ :budgiedance:
September 12, 200717 yr So happy that Quasie made it to the vet and is getting treatment, may your buddy and you feel better very soon!
September 12, 200717 yr l'm so glad that you took your little one to the vet. l hope that he well get better soon and have a quick recovery
September 16, 200717 yr Author Hi All Just thought I'd let you know that all your help paid off, and quickly. Our little man is back! He is just as noisy and active as he used to be, he is eating heaps and we are hoping that he will be putting all the weight he lost back on. I got some great advise from another forum on foogles and his weight problem. The suggestions on the corn was a great one, he loves it and we are getting a little egg mix into him as well. We have another vet appointment tomorrow so we should get an idea on where he is up to but if his personality is anything to go by he is doing fine. Once again thanks for all your help and support. Fi, Shane and Quasie
