Posted September 9, 200717 yr Hi all, cross posting this from another forum I am on. I was cleaning our budgies' cage earlier and noticed blood on one of the perches that wasn't there yesterday. I looked at the birds and discovered who it was, as there's also a small amount of blood on his tailfeather and a lot around his rectum which has got me really worried. We can't take him to the vet because no one is open today, but does anyone has any suggestions as to what we could do or what it could be? All I can think of is worms. He doesn't look unwell, though he's clearly troubled by the blood and probably more agitated than usual. I feel terrible about this, I'd like to do something for him if possible. Any ideas as to what the problem could be (Yes, member has been advised to take to avian vet asap) photo of budgie....
September 9, 200717 yr If its not coming directly from his rectum- ie the feathers around it, it could just be a blood feather- new feather broken off or he's pulled it too hard causing it to bleed a little- if it is this there is not much worry. If its coming from his rectum then yes- to the vet If it was coming from the rectum and the bird was a hen I might have been inclined to say eggbound.
September 9, 200717 yr Can't see much in the photo, but the blood looks to be coming from the base of the tail, which makes me think he's got a new feather growing and it's broken. If it is this, then it's really nothing to worry about. Either the owner, or a vet, can remove the broken blood feather and there shouldn't be any more problems. If it's actually coming from the bottom, then definitely, the budgie should see a vet which has already been advised. :dbb1:
September 9, 200717 yr I agree with Bea, and it looks to be coming from the preen gland area not the rectum. Closer investigation needed by owner.
September 9, 200717 yr I agree with others that area pointed out is not the vent/rectum area but the base of the tail and as Kaz said the preen gland area.
September 10, 200717 yr Author The bird was seen by a vet this afternoon. He's just gotten back and it's nothing too serious The vet thinks he's doing it to himself (cage birds do that sometimes?) and there seems to be a lump and possibly an infection in that area, so he's given us some antibiotics (ones mentioned earlier in the thread) for him and hopefully they'll clear it up. He also checked for mites and couldn't find any. Thanks again everyone for all your help So thanks to all for replying
September 11, 200717 yr So glad he has made a trip to the vet and gotten check out, may he recover quickly!
