January 11, 200520 yr Ive called all the vets. None of them specialize in birds. They said there's nothing I can do. OMG it's basic first aid!! If I were you I'd be marching into their office screaming at them to help this bird! I can't believe a VET would refuse to help whether they were avian specialists or not. PaSCaL, if it is a blood feather that is broken the bird could bleed to death if you don't pull it. Their bodies will continue to pump blood through the feather with every heartbeat and if it is not pulled they could bleed to death. It's just like shooting water through a hose until you turn off the hose. if a blood feather breaks, you're supposed to block it.. or stop it bleeding until the blood stops flowing. Then when the blood is dry, then you can pull the feather, otherwise it'll be a bloody mess
January 11, 200520 yr Sorry Cupid200 we all tried as hard as we could as you yourself did too.It didn't sound too good from the start.Thinking of you,and shame on those vets who wouldn't help. Julie
January 11, 200520 yr Did anyone say about putting corn flour on the wound? That will stop it within 2 mins. Cornflower is what you use to stop the budgies bleeding. Who said salt? NEVER EVER use salt on a budgie's wound!
January 11, 200520 yr It was me who said about the salt Adam, the situation was an emergency and he/she needed some help desperately.I had to think of something that might be in the house at the time and suggested a very dilute salt solution to help spread infection(I also said that an bird antiseptic would be better but if they had nothing else then salt would be better than nothing). I personally didn't know about cornflour so I've learnt something very useful there. Julie
January 11, 200520 yr aww im soooo sorry xxxxx can I suggest (you are from Canada?) that you go to the www.spca.co and look up contact, then contact your local branch and report the vets you spoke to. I know it cannot bring your budgie back but it might stop what happened to you happening to anyone else. Edited January 11, 200520 yr by sallybear

Ouch. Would you put salt in your own cut? I'd think warm water would do well to clean along with applied pressure to stop bleeding until the bird went to the vet. Is your vet an avian vet?
January 12, 200520 yr Sorry to hear about your bird, it is hard watching them suffer. Did you manage to stop the bleeding? Cindy
January 12, 200520 yr well yah i have been told to put salt in my knee when i scraped it REALLY badly. and it did hurt. a lot. but it got better a lot faster.

As an exprianced breeder, and the same information coming from other vets that I know of, that is something you never do. Rainbow is very right.
January 12, 200520 yr oscarchik101, very true... it may sting a bit, but then the pain is over and done with afterwards. adam, you stick with your method, and I'll stick with mine
January 12, 200520 yr I would strongly advise to NOT to use salt. If in an emergency and you have nothing else, I guess a very very very dilute solution may be administered. I have just heard of someone doing that, it caused the bird so much pain that it died. It is really up to what you want to do.
January 12, 200520 yr whilst speaking to many different bird owners i am beginning to realise just how different we all are and people from all over the world are getting different advice and have different opinions which is why i think sometimes it is best to use your own initiative in things. so many times i hear different advice for the same thing. not that anybody is being purposely different but they are just given different advice or they have tried something that may work for their bird but it wouldnt be right for another bird. something worth bearing in mind perhaps.
January 12, 200520 yr yup, i would not do anything to an animal that i would not do myself, but im not sure with the salt, as that is what i put on mouth sores for me and my horses so i would have probable done the same for my bird.?? ATD
January 13, 200520 yr Yes some good points there. Can I just say as well that I did say to use a little salt diluted in warm water. Some of the posts make it sound as if it's just pouring the salt cellar straight onto the birds wounds-NO WAY and it was an emergency where no vets would help. The person needed something she ccould do there and then and I suspect didn't have anything more suitable in the house. Julie
January 25, 200520 yr A bit late on scene but...Some info on stopping the bleeding of claws when trimmed to close is to use peroxide I have used it on my bantams and maltese ,mind you it wasn't heavy bleeding but it certainly eased the bleeding..
