Posted January 9, 200520 yr Hey, Im new here and I need help! Last night I heard my budgie fall in the cage when he was suppose to be sleeping. I went to check on him and I found a lot of blood on the cage floor. Under his wing I saw a lot of blood. Unfortunately I live in an area where there is no avarian vet available. I called the local vet, but they told me they weren't able to help because there is no one that specializes in birds. However, they did tell me that if it's from a feather, seeing as how the major bleeding was coming from under his wing, then to remove that feather from the stem using tweezers. If it's not from a feather, well they basically told me to spend as much time with him as possible because he won't make it. When I looked under the wing, I couldnt tell where he was bleeding from. Maybe if I take a picture, someone can be kind enough to help? I tried cleaning up the blood but to no avail. It seems to have dried. All he seems to do is sit on the bottom of the cage, or cuddle up really really close to my neck. Please help me, I don't know what to do!
January 9, 200520 yr Keep him warm.Try dabbing the area gently with bird antiseptic or just warm water with salt added. Put some honey into his drinking water. Good Luck. Julie
January 9, 200520 yr Thank you for the help. I'll keep you posted. After further examination, I believe there's a gash where his "arm pit" is. I don't think it has stopped bleeding. I'll try and clean the wound with warm water and salt. Thank you once again. I really appreciate your help.
January 9, 200520 yr OMG don't use Salt!! OUCH! Just use warm water to clean the area so you can see where it is bleeding. If it starts to bleed again, treat it just like you would a wound on yourself - just apply some pressure until it stops. Since it was at night, I'm guessing he had a night fright and was thrashing around in the cage. They can hurt themselves pretty bad when that happens if you don't stop them.
January 9, 200520 yr :bluebudgie: good luck with him/her, i'm not really sure what to do but i hope it all ends up well.
January 9, 200520 yr the warm water on the injury is a good idea.. even the salt. just not too much salt. After all, salt may sting a bit, but will heal the wound much faster than plain water Good luck and I hope he/she makes it!! :bluebudgie:
January 9, 200520 yr yeah a little salt will help to disinfect the wound. maybe wrap him in a little teatowel to keep him nice and warm and then just stay by his side. i really hope he pulls through. thinking of you and your little friend x
January 9, 200520 yr Thank you all! I tried cleaning the wound with a little bit of salt in warm water. And Im sure you all couldve guessed he didn't like that very much. He keep pecking at the wound now, which I'm sure is not good at all so I sprayed the area with bitter extract. That seemed to do the trick. Now all he's doing is sitting at the bottom of the cage. He's not moving much. I put his food and water there so he can at least eat and drink. My poor baby! :bluebudgie:
January 9, 200520 yr bless him. make sure he is warm, put a blanket over 3 cage sides or put him near to a heat source. i hope he gets better soon.
January 9, 200520 yr He's more than likely just sitting there, because of the loss of so much blood. Remember, budgies have tiny little bodies, and if they lose a lot of blood.. well yea, I'd feel weak too! So having the food and water close buy is a very good start! Maybe you should also try giving him some of his favourite treats to encourage eating... which will make him heal faster also :bluebudgie:
January 10, 200520 yr i would give millet or a favourite treat and a fav. toy near him so if he starts feeling better he'll have a bit to do without having to move to much and possibly re-injure himself. good luck!!!
January 10, 200520 yr oh you poor thing. how is he doing now??? did you put him near a heat source?? my heart really goes out to you. good luck i wish you all the luck in the world.
January 10, 200520 yr Update: I check the cage every 30minutes, and just now I noticed MORE blood on the paper towels. I'm at a loss for words! I don't know why he won't stop bleeding! I tried to clean the wound as best I could, I guess I didn't do much so he started picking at it. I really really hope he pulls through.. I've got university all day tomorrow, so I won't be around to care for him.
January 10, 200520 yr Where exactly is the bleeding coming from? If it is from a feather, and you are not going to take him to a vet (which if it won't stop he needs to go see) you will need to pull it. If it is from skin, you will need to apply pressure until it stops. If he picks at it and that is why it keeps re-opening, you will need to find some way to temporarily bandage it. All this is temporary first aid, until he can get to the vets. If you can't take him, can someone else?
January 10, 200520 yr Ive called all the vets. None of them specialize in birds. They said there's nothing I can do.
January 10, 200520 yr If its his blood feather.. DONT PULL IT!!!! ... he possibly could have broken the end off of the blood feather (near the top of the wing.. the thickest feather, where u can see a vein going through it)... i've heard a few cases of birds breaking their blood feathers and bleeding a LOT.. some even dying from it (if no one has attempted 2 stop the bleeding)
January 10, 200520 yr cupid200, It is possible that the injury may go a little deeper than just the surface which is why it won't stop bleeding. You can buy something called a styptic pencil which helps stop blood flow but by the sound of it I think you need to take him back to the vet or do you have an animal charity like our r.s.p.c.a.? Or a bird sanctuary? Rainbow -I only recommened salt because it seemed to me to be an emergency which needed something immediate.I suspected that salt would be something that was in the house right then and there. Yes it may sting but it does have an antiseptic quality and I thought it better than nothing. In my opinion this bird needs help as it only needs a small loss of blood to become serious. Julie
January 10, 200520 yr Your birdy needs a vet. And if your vet says they cant help u... find another vet! My vet doesnt specialise in avian stuff, but they at least try to help and know a lot about birds for those just-in-case times.
January 10, 200520 yr Im sorry there's nothing i can do to help but i just started looking after birds a while ago, I really hope your little friend gets better!!
January 10, 200520 yr It would be best to try your best not to distress your budgie, if he is only staying on the floor and not flying then it might be good to wrap a bandage around his wing which could add a resonable amount of presure and would stop him from pecking under his wing, but i'm not so sure about this because i have never come across something like this.
January 10, 200520 yr That's a very good idea JackandBen,Although it would probably upset the bird it may be the thing it needs. If it is still just sitting on the floor then some sort of tube type bandage round his whole body would probably be good-force him to rest the wound and stop him pecking at it and help stem the bleeding. Good thinking JackandBen. Julie
January 11, 200520 yr Ive called all the vets. None of them specialize in birds. They said there's nothing I can do. OMG it's basic first aid!! If I were you I'd be marching into their office screaming at them to help this bird! I can't believe a VET would refuse to help whether they were avian specialists or not. PaSCaL, if it is a blood feather that is broken the bird could bleed to death if you don't pull it. Their bodies will continue to pump blood through the feather with every heartbeat and if it is not pulled they could bleed to death. It's just like shooting water through a hose until you turn off the hose.
January 11, 200520 yr Rest in Peace Coco. I was lucky enough to have known you for as long as I did. To all those who posted, thank you for your kind words and help.
