Just a minute ago I was bringing my caged budgies inside for the night when I saw an egg in the bottom of one of the cages. The female wasn't sitting on it so I brought it inside. I have put it in a box on a towel with a lamp over it. I don't know what to do now. I NEED SOME HELP!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!

Dont panic. Eggs dont need keeping warm until the hen begins to start incubating them along with others. The egg will be fine unless it was laid from the perch, in which case it may well be addled and wont hatch.

What is the situation with the hen. Does she have partner ? A nestbox ? Other eggs ? etc.

Kaz, she has no nest box, no other eggs, she does have a partner but they have only been together for 2 days. We think she might actually have the egg from another male because we only got her on Sunday, at the markets. We didn't quarantine her because 1. My dad didn't want to and 2. there was no sign of disease in the cage she is from.

After I made this topic, we decided to put her in the aviary where there are 2 more nest boxes, in case she did mate with the male we had her with, and there were more eggs on the way. Is this okay??

I wouldnt worry about that egg. Throw it away. Eggs dont come that fast from new introductions to a new partner so it could be like you said from another mating or laid from stress.

BUT ..........Quarantine is super important Having had psittacosis go through an aviary once and seeing birds drop dead is not fun. Looking into a cage you bought the bird from will tell you nothing with regards to illness.

Birds get sick from stress.

Stress happens

1. from breeding

2. from being caught and moved

3. from getting used to a new home and new food

4. Being shifted around all over the place and not knowing where the food and water is exactly.

You should put any new birds in quarantine for at least 30 days and sometimes longer.

Here is an article on quarantine ( maybe show it to your Dad too )

I really feel a great sense of dread when I read that someone hasn't quarantined a new bird. I even put my budgies through a mini quarantine if they have been in an exhibition hall with other budgies, even when they never go into the same cage as any other bird. Too scary.

Stress is the quickest way to bring out a latent illness in a bird. Breeding is one source of stress, as is relocating a bird, as is a change in diet via different food or even a different brand of food, and breeding is another. So, there are 4 major stresses being put on this bird currently. I would quarantine, even though she has been with another of your birds, addle the egg by shaking it (or put it under another hen) and let her settle in.

l also feel sad when l here someone not quarantine. l realize that there are some reason's that they don't but it is such a huge risk to do that.

only once did l ever not quarantine. l wanted to, they where in quarantine for 1 1/2 week but l had a really close uncle of mine that had passed away, l had to put them all in one cage to move them to a friend's house who was bird sitting for me ( l went out of town for a week, to help my greiving aunt.) l was really lucky that they where all healthy, but l will never take that chance ever again.
