Tip: Treat for a bored budgie

hey all,

The other day i wanted to give Digit a little treat and make him a scratch patch. Basically its a biggish, shallow box with lots of bits n pieces in it that he can scratch and play in!

This is what it looks like:

Anyways, I'll list here what's in it so you can make your babies scratch patches too!

Scratch Patch "Ingredients":

* Grit (that normal stone-type little pieces you give to your birds)

* Sesame Seeds

* Normal bird seed

* Hard, Plainly salted pretzels (only a few! Too much salt is bad for budgies)

* Little savoury biscuits that can come in packs with pretzels (hardly any salt is on them)

* Sunflower seeds (without the shells)

* Dry Oats

* Dried Pumpkin seeds

* A CD that is turned around for a "mirror" effect

...And anything else you can think of (thats okay for your budgie to eat) may get added into the mixture.

When you've finished making the mix, pour it into the shallow (+- 10cm's high) box and watch your budgie have the time of his/her life! And when they've finished scratching like little colourful chickens, pour the scratch patch mixture into a jar and keep it for another time! But be sure not to keep it for months on end, I'd suggest re-make the mixture every month, to avoid stale seed n biscuits!

wow, what a good way to entertain them :D the only bit about it that i don't like is the bit of finding a box for it (way to hard for me to find) and i don' think Ben would stay in there.

hehe, yea.. it entertains them for hours :D The box I use for Digit is just the bottom of a normal Biscuits box (the extra big ones). You could even use the bottom of his cage. As you clean the bottom of his cage, you could scatter the scratch patch mix in it for a few hours for him 2 play in.. and then clean it up afterwards and then continue cleaning and papering the bottom of his cage!

Just a thought :D

I am definately going to give that a try!

Love the signature!

thats a good idea! (Laughing out loud) my birds are infatuated with my cds. i cant leave them out or there's birdy snot on it from then sitting there and sneezing (eeeeeewwwwwwwww!!)

haha, yea.. digit loves the scratch patch! Obsessed with it even :bluebudgie:

Birdy snot.....mmm, digit always sits on my finger n talks to me, then either sneezes right in my face or yawns. Its kinda funny... when he yawns, u can feel the warm "air" coming from his little beak :huh:

:bluebudgie: i'm going to try that on ben, see what he thinks of it, maybe reduse the amount of ingredience or sub some :huh:

Yea, i havent put in exact amounts n stuff, so put more-or-less what you think he'd like :D

I think he would like it over then time jack isn't around, can i take the pretzels out because we don't really get them around here, and also im worried that he won't like it and it would be a waist :D i'll make i prototype mini version on it.

yea, you can add or remove anything you dont have or dont think your budgie would like! Digit just loves gnawing on pretzels and little plain cracker pieces, thats why I added them in. Any dry, budgie-suitable things are good for the scratch patch! You could even add beads(Big beads though, otherwise your budgie might choke on them if they're little)
