Parrot Blend Vs Budgie Blend

Featured Replies

Harlye loves "Bird Munchies Budgie Gourmet Blend" However last week I was running low so I went to buy some and the shop near me was out, so I then went to the other safe way and they where out. I have been looking around for a few days but can't get the Budgie mix. This makes up the base of his diet. He gets other things and have been upping his vegs to strech it but still I am not out and can't seem to find it. So I bought the "Parrot Gourmet Blend"

Is this okay? Should he be right on this until I use it all and then move back to the Budgie mix or should I switch back ASAP?

Thanks in advance

Does it say on the container for what type of parrots? Most of the time it does because the bigger parrots even tiels blend the seeds tend to be bigger so you will find that the budgies may not be able to handle it and then will eat all the varieties of millet (which can be fattening).

I have heard it is best if there is no budgie blend to go with the canary for sub.

This is my opinion. :D

Nope just says suitable for most parrots. their Budgie mix is for Canary's as well, hmmm will put their bells in and up the vegs in case they don't eat and and just have to hunt around to find some more.

Harley is very picky about his seed mixes, I know I could just use Trill for Blue but Harley will not touch it!

I have a few sticks and bells so will give him those as well and hope I can find some more in the next few says otherwise I am going to have to look for another brand that he will eat.

Thanks anayway.

Canary or finch mix will do as second choice if you cant get budgie mix. Parrot mix has mostly larger seed types. They will eat some of it, but waste just as much probably. Often changing their seed can force a moult, too. Pays to keep extra on hand to always be a little ahead. :D

I ended up putting the seed through the strainer so all the small seeds came out and the big seeds stayed behind, then I mixed this with other stuff that I have on hand, worked okay but will be glad when I can get some of the other stuff back, the big seed went outside into the bird feeder at my dads house so there was not much waste

What a great idea!

I don't think it will hurt for a short amount of time to give them the bigger parrot mix. It sounds like they are used to eating a variety of foods anyway, so should not be too much of a problem. I usually substitute finch mix in a bind, as it's usually the same as budgie mix but with thistle added. My budgies love it.

Looking at the little I had left and what was in the parrot mix it looks pretty much the same, he ate it so guess there is not an issue, I still think I need to find a better mix as I am not sure that it is the best, but he is getting better and better then eating his fruit and vegs now he is in the same cage as Blue.

The different mixes of seeds are usually just different percentages of the same seeds for certain types of birds , ie canary , french white , jap , red and other millets as well as particular seeds to suit a species . Small parrot has a basic mix plus sunfower and safflower to suit small parrots . Finch would be the basic mix plus special seed to suit finches , you can mix and match seed mixes without hurting too much the birds will pick out what they want if the mix is wrong you just get more wastage . A variety of seeds is good for birds even if they dont eat it all it keeps them occupied choosing what they want from what they dont . Just keep a look out and make sure that there are empty seel cases to ensure that they are eating . If you know what your birds like you can buy the individual seeds and make your own mix just remember that it is usually better to have a consistant mix or usual mix that is the mainstay of a birds diet as a change in diet can sometimes cause problems , never change a birds diet in the breeding cage this can put birds off feeding themselves and their young .
