Posted August 25, 200717 yr Hi all, I have 4 budgies, 2 young, 2 old. the older ones don't like being handled, the female bites really hard, the ,male just flies everywhere. One of the younger ones lets me hold him but not for very long. The other one again just flies away. I think the older ones are probably past taming but im interested in taming the younger ones or at least the one that lets me hold him. How can i do this? is there a trick to it. I hold him and talk to him but he is quite nervous. I would appreciate any help you have! The young ones are almost nine months. Thnks Sam
August 25, 200717 yr What do you mean by tame? There are different levels of tame. I believe when you have 4 birds all together and a couple of them are not tame you are going to have to realize that at this point you want them to accept you as part of the flock. If you are looking for follow me around tame, kissy tame, talking tame it will be nearly impossible to acheive that with 4 budgies all together especially if you have 2 that are already older and not very tamed. Millet is a great resource for gaining trust and that is where you will have to work first on. Use the younger ones as your tools for the older ones to start trusting you. We also have a great taming guide in the FAQ that can give you more ideas .
September 1, 200717 yr Author Hi , This is what i mean by tame. sit on my shoulder step onto my finger. That sort of thing. I have another cage i can put the younger ones in if that would help. Sam
September 1, 200717 yr I would say you would need a very tamed budgie that is totally bonded to you first before introducing them to the untamed budgie. In my experience, Pretty was tamed but when I got Merlin he preferred him to me totally. Likewise, there is Bea, Riebe and Una who have very tamed budgies that are still very bonded to them but they were extremely tamed and some I believe Bea's and Una were handled from a very young age (before they were out of the next) Levels of tame I am talking about is... Do you want a budgie that runs up to you, gives you kisses, preens you, follows you everywhere? Or do you want one that will step up when needed, aknowledges you but not frighten of you, but really won't follow you around but does enjoy your company? There is a great topic about taming and how people tamed their budgie in this article Taming your Budgie from BBC FAQ's
