Posted August 23, 200717 yr Hi All My first baby hatched on the 7th of August so when can I start handling them? Thanks My quail have now got 14 eggs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
August 23, 200717 yr i normally wait untill their starting to feather before handling them. i prefer them have some warmth when i take them out of the box when than when they are still pinkies and cant controll their body temp.
August 23, 200717 yr I'm not sure if others would agree, but I have handled all of mine from hatching :yellowhead: although when they are newly hatched they are very awkward to hold. All of my babies have been very tame as a result and will land all over me while I am in the aviary!
August 23, 200717 yr Some handle form day one just to give them a quick check over and such, the handling to start tame them down somewhat is normally started around the the two week mark.
August 24, 200717 yr I handle mine from the very first day. You really do need to anyway to check the chicks for all kinds of things. If you are a breeder who puts legrings on, you also must do that before they feather. Handling them daily gets them used to you, gets the Mum used to you being in and out of the nest box, and tames the chick. :hap:

August 27, 200717 yr THanks you guys and Girls are so helpfulShould I put keg rings on if so how? Not if they are just pet budgies. It applies mostly to show budgies. Some pet budgies wear split rings ( that you can put on any time ) ...these ones are so you can tell them apart or so you can tell what family they belong to.
September 26, 200717 yr How would I go about that? Buy your split rings and follow the directions. Many bird places who sell these would show you how to use them. Plastic split rings come with an applicator. There are soft coloured aluminium split rings with tabs and they are easy to use...just open them and press them closed once on the leg.

There must have been another reason.
