does anyone her show their budgies?

what sorta things do u do there ect ect... it woulkd be great to know!!

I've wanted to show my budgies but can't find anywhere to buy or hire show cages.

I've been to a few local shows to watch and get tips but they always land on days I have to be elsewhere.

hi you can buy show cages from the budgerigar society http://www.budgerigarsociety.com/ go to the fanciers sales stand part where you can get new and reconditioned show cages or try some auctions where you can buy cheap show cages (please ensure that you give them a good clean with disinfectant) if they are the old type of show cage you buy conversion kits from the same web site, i to have trouble attending some shows as i work most weekends hath

Now just need to know if they MUST be ringed as I don't (and won't ) ring my birds.

They've never replied to my e-mails reguarding that matter.

PyscoFalcon yes you can still show if your birds arn't rung but you will have to enter any age as you will not be allowed to enter young bird as you cant prove the age or that you bred the bird just out of curiosity why don't you ring your birds and how do you keep track of all your birds hath

With my budgies now i am staring to get more and more i am ringing them as babies...with their D.O.B on them to keep track

Every single bird I've had has had to have the ring cut off cos of the above.

If I hadn't removed that ring poor Violet would of lost her leg.

 

Keep track of them - simple, I bond stongly with all my birds and I only keep several at a time. I know most by the sound of there chirp as well as colour etc.

 

I can remeber all the names of over 250 I've kept/have.

 

My husband can only remember 5 names of animals we have now. (3 gerbils and 2 birds)

 

I also have reccord cards with all the details on (1 for each animal I breed)

do you know why this happened ? i have had birds for the last 20 years or so last 9 seriously dedicated to budgies owning between 100 and 250 depending on time of year and have never had any thing like that happen it looks horrid for the bird hath

Yes, that problem happens alot and is leg threated and could fall off ect but for us in Austraila it is required for the budgie to have it so we can show our birds.

but why do you think it happens adam i asked at our local club and there did'nt seem to be many people with this problem just the occasional accident hath

Quite a lot of birds are now growing bigger than the "proper" budgie size, probably due to breeding exhabition birds with pet birds. (Pets birds are way smaller)

 

Therefore the chicks get normal budgie rings on but they out grow them. Not everyone checks the rings daily - it should be done at least weekly to make sure it can freely move around the leg, if it can't it should come off before the bird get's serious damage and pain.

sorry i dont believe that this is the cause i myself breed exhabition birds and have had no problems of this happening ( and as stated there is not a major problem of this happening at my local club ), i do not believe that the governing body (budgerigar society) would sell incorrect sizes of ring hath

In regard to the leg problem, that happens when rubbish or dirt gets between the leg and the ring and presses on the leg causing it to swell and possibly get infected.

The ring must be removed right away or you could loose the leg.

now i dont want to sound as if i am getting at people but these two quotes would indicate that peoples bird room hygiene is not what it should be

no, thats just a natural thing.

It happens in MOST bird rooms, but it helps to keep the room clean.

well, not everyone is as clean as me or you!

totally agree adam i've seen some aviarys that are disgusting these people dont deserve to keep these brilliant birds

You know I kind of do like rings and I kind of don't, here I'll tell you why!

My first cockatiel, Cucu, was out of his cage (it was Summer) and I was at the youth center cuz I'm 12! And so when I left I thought he would be fine out of his cage but he was only 'bout 3 months old so I left him out and left then he tired to fly (which he couldn't well) and he landed on this sharp point on his cage (used for opening and closing his cage at the top. ugh, hard to explain) right in the middle of his leg thank god my mom got home for a break from work! And she saw him, so she took him to the vet (and just on her way there he had lost tons of blood) and the reason I don't like rings is because it was pretty hard for the Doc. to take a look at it! But the reason I ABSOLUTELY LOVE RINGS is because the doc. said that the ONLY thing that was holding his leg together was the ring!!! And that's why they couldn't take it off and now he still has his LUCKY RING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and his leg)!

As im a registered budgie breeder, I beloning to a budgie breeding club. I have special rings with my name on it.

That shows that my budgies are quality pedigree birds and your buying and breeding with confidence.

Also if your budgie gets away, and someone finds it, they can ring the club and you can get ur bird back! Its like an ID tag.

u cant fit the whole name on it, so it has my initals.

Just got more rings from the budgie council.

They are blue this year.

so there are dif colours for dif years right...
