Had Nest Box In For Awhile, Thought Something Would Happen But...

Ive had a nest box in my budgies cage, for a really long time, since may 14th actually, I was going to take it out, but then about 3 weeks ago my budgies were going in and out of the nest box a lot, so i left it in. I went on a trip for about 3 weeks, and my female is still in condition, but nothing is happening, ever since ive been back i havent seen either go in the next box. I am going to take it out, but how long do you think I should I keep it out?

remove it. Normally something should happen in two or three weeks of a nest box being added.

How old are they? Did you move the cage while the nest box was there? did you let them out to play still?

I would wait at least a month and only add if they are of age and still in condition. If not I would them leave them for at least 6 months.

I agree with Nerwen. Also there are many variables that can change a breeding success or not story.

Age of birds ?

Type and size of cage ?

Location of both cage and nestbox ? Nestbox high is best.

Privacy ?

Noise factor ? Too quiet, too much traffic and disruption ?

Too much cage clutter ?

A decent perch for mating ?

etc, etc, etc

Its always best to put more than one pair down to breed for many reasons. They tend to encourage each other by seeing the flirty behaviour. Also, anything goes wrong you can transfer eggs and or babies.

Sometimes, two pet budgies that have been cage mates for a long time dont seem all that interested in the new breeding requirements, but with a new partner may well do.

Have you a photo of your cage setup with nestbox ? That might help with more advice.

both the male and female are around 17 months old. so about 1 year and 5 months old. the cage is in the same spot, and they were getting the same amount of excersise. i do not have a picture at the moment, but i will try to get one as soon as possible(probably tomorrow). another thing that might be wrong, is the whole nest box is inside the cage hanging up, so say it doesnt matter, and others say it does matter.

Outside the cage is better as it then gives them more room to fly around each other in mating behaviour and room in the future for fledging babies. Also easier access to check eggs and chicks. Chicks should be checked twice daily when they arrive. Maybe they see their cage as a great play area and not as a "breeding cage". So you could remove a few toys, change the cage around, or alternatively put them in a different cage ( if you have one ) for breeding purposes. :dbb1:

yea that could also be the problem, that they do see it as just a play area, and nothing else for the most part. i will take out the nest box, and change some of the toys around, and all of that. I will see how it goes.
