Which Bird's Live Happily Together?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am going to buy some bird's, and am just wondering if Finch's live in an aviary well with Budgie's.

Also if you know of any other bird's that live well together I would appreciate ANY ideas.

Thanks a lot,

Kirsten :ygbudgie:

I think some people have finches and budgies together, or budgies and cockatiels. I think they should also all be from the same place (like Australian, ...) if mixed. But I personally don't think it's good to mix. And if you do have them together, I think it's better not to breed in the aviary as you could have a problem with some birds being teritorial and attack the breeding pairs or babies.

Here is a link to a discusion about mixing species, maybe it will help, if you read it :Dhttp://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....=mixing+species

Budgies are not one of the best species to mix, they're agro little rats at times. It's safest to just leaves budgies with budgies, if you want to mix try for the more peaceful species (ask KAZ, her husband has a mixed aviary). :D

I am afraid I would never put any other birds in with my budgies. My husband has a mixed aviary, of parrots, finches and canaries, but his aviary is HUGE.....30 feet long by 10 feet wide by 8 feet high and planted out, so all those birds have special places to be and lots of room. Also the parrots species he has are more peaceful types than some can be. How big is your aviary ? Do you have photos ?

Hi KAZ,

I dont have a picture of my cage

its about the length of a car!!!

What other birds could you put with Budgie's???

TTYL,

Kirsten

Hi Kirsten, personally I would not put any other breed with budgies. They can be very agressive creatures and you could find other birds pecked, beaten up and dead on the floor. Budgies should be with budgies.

Feathers.

As Feathers says...just more budgies. I would not mix anything with budgies :yellowhead:

I learnt the hard way not to mix finches and budgies with the budgies attacking the finch babies.

In a small aviary, only budgies. You could have some quail on the floor if you wanted, but there are mixed views on that too and it's not without risks either.

In a BIG, BIG aviary, with lots of cover, branches and places for birds to escape to the less aggressive parrots are okay. Eastern Rosellas are particularly sociable and easy to get on with. I've moved my Varied Lorikeets into the big non-breeding budgie retirement aviary (birds either too old or not suitable for my breeding program) and so far they are okay, but I'm watching them closely as I do not quite trust them yet. They can be a bit pugnacious at times when they are not busy being total clowns.

Finches really do better in planted aviaries, and budgies will destroy any plant in an aviary given sufficient time. Finches and budgies do not mix well. My advice - don't do it.

Prior to a couple of weeks ago I had in my main aviary: 40 Budgies, 8 Lovebirds, 7 Bourke's, 8 Red Rumps, 2 Green Cheek Conures & 2 Eastern Rosella's.

My main aviary is not used for breeding.

I moved the Lovebirds out as 1 pair bit a budgie drawing blood.

I moved the Green Cheek Conures out as I have now put them in their own cage to breed.

The Bourke's are fine as they mostly keep out of the budgie's way but sometimes a budgie will seek them out.

Red Rumps in non breeding situations are not usually aggressive (except when adding new pair RR) & the budgies can't bully them.

Green Cheeks are okay as long as you know the personality of them. My male is a real pussycat and got on with the budgies. I introduced a new female about 5 months ago and she's a little cow.

The Eastern Rosella's mainly ignore the budgies except when they decide to play a game that I call "try to squash the budgies". It is funny to watch - they wait until a budgie is a bit separate and then fly straight at it knocking it from the perch or attempting to land on it while it's on the wire. They haven't got a wire one yet - budgies see them coming! :(Laughing out loud):

Kakariki get on well with budgies too.
