Posted August 15, 200717 yr Hello, Im new to this so I'm just going to ask, why are mums budgies eating/destroying the nesting boxes? I have just brought one for my two little sweethearts and wonder if they will do the same thing. Are they lacking something or is it as the pet shop assistant said and its just something they do? Im a bit concerned with the mdf and chipboard boxes may contain chemicals that may hurt my Budgies So if anyone has the answer I'd love to hear it. Thanks for taking the time to read my post Carrie
August 15, 200717 yr Someone else with breeding experience might have a better answer for you, but hens LOVE to chew. And I believe that in the wild, they create their nest by chewing into a tree or branch. I would imagine then that chewing their nest boxes is just instinctive for them. I totally understand the concern about them ingesting harmful chemicals though. Do you provide them with any wooden perches or safe branches for them to chew on? That might be a healthy alternative to the boxes.
August 15, 200717 yr They are simply fixing the box up as THEIR nest, with a little bit of wood shavings inside they will dig around and scrape it to the sides. MDF is what most pet shop nest boxes are made out of. And I believe that in the wild, they create their nest by chewing into a tree or branch wild budgies use a hollow branch or even just a shallow cave in rocks. August 15, 200717 yr Hens like to chew at things when they are coming in to season. Nest boxes are just one thing they will chew. I use 9mm cd ply for my boxes. It is durable and can with stan d a couple of seasons. I don't recommend MDF or Chip board. MDF is poisonous to us let alone the birds.
August 15, 200717 yr I put a piece of 2x1 pine onto the removable concave floor for them to chew, and they really go for it too.
