Posted August 15, 200717 yr HI ,everyone my last budgie cheeky weighed 35g from when i first purchased him until he was 14 months! frisky above is 35g his is 4 months old and is still 35g can anyone tell me what a normal budgie weighs at say 3 months ,6 months 12 months or adult? what is best to feed him so that he can put on weight? thanks
August 15, 200717 yr He looks like he's a good weight. A pet budgie should be anywhere from 30-45 grams. My pet budgie Boris is usually around 42grams but she eats extra when she wants to breed & gets to about 46grams. Show budgies are usually upwards of 45grams. I really don't think he needs to put more weight on - he might become overweight and inpede his ability to fly.
August 15, 200717 yr Right. There is an acceptable weight range for budgies and which is right for a particular bird is determined by that bird, just like with people. A good way of determining ideal weight for a bird is to feel for its keel bone. If its protruding, they need to gain. If they feel really pudgy and you can't find the bone, they need to lose.
August 15, 200717 yr I like them around the 50 to 60 grams but having said that a show bird can be too fat. (Don't confused with Big) I big bird can weigh up to 150grams and stand 265mm long. (top of crown to tip of tail)
August 16, 200717 yr Just to clear up any confusion, Frisky, Daz's budgies are the larger show-type budgies. It looks like you have the smaller variety. The budgie in your picture should lose a gram or two as he gets good at flying. At his age they are learning all sorts of aerial acrobatics and will lose a little weight. When they fledge (leave the nest box) they are normally at their high weight. They have had 5 or 6 weeks of sitting inside the box (maybe doing a little flapping during the last week) but other than that just eating. :dbb1: Flying exercise slims them down. For the smaller type budgies anywhere from 28-35 grams is about average, depending upon the bone structure. Of course there will be a few variances over, but under 28 grams will usually indicate a problem. There weight should not fluctuate much after 5 or 6 months of age unless you have a breeding hen. My Skittles normally weighs around 32 grams, but when her hormones are high and she is in breeding mode she weighs 40 grams. I think a great many budgies are a little too chunky (I know a few of mine are!), as they are normally very streamlined birds in the wild, tending to look a little thin. You should be able to easily feel the keel bone and when the bird is on your finger you shouldn't feel much of anything at all. :ausb: Hope this is of help to you.
August 16, 200717 yr Thanks Rainbow. The chick on the left is a "Pet" bird the one on the right is a show bird. Both are 21 days old. You can see the difference.
