Pippin Is In Vet Hospital

I took Pippin to the vets on Friday afternoon as he has problems with his sinus's and over the last 12 months has had several doses of antibiotics which don't seem to clear the problem altogether. Well on Friday the vet (avian) decided that it had gone on long enough and needed a different approach. He admitted Pippin and he is being nebulised twice daily with antibiotics in the hope of getting the medication properly into his system.

I was told it was just for a couple of days, but my little man is still there. He is doing very well and the vet is really pleased with his progress. This morning I was told that he was chirping happily away, his feathers had dried out and he wasn't as sneezy. Hopefully, when I ring in the morning I will be able to go and collect him.

I miss him so much, and the house is so quiet. Its awful walking into the lounge and his cage is there and no little Pippin.

On another good note, I was getting a bit twitchy about how much all this nursing and treatment was adding up to. I finally plucked up the courage to ask this morning and was amazed when the receptionist quoted £37.50. I was expecting a really huge bill. It just goes to show that not all vet treatment is that expensive.

I will let you know if he comes home tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Awww, glad to hear he's getting the care needed. Do they know whats causing the sinus problems?

:( Glad to hear that Pippin's health is improving and may he come home soon! Good about the vet bill too, every once in awhile you get a pleasant surprise. :)

That's really great that he is getting better and really super news on the vet bill. :(

Very glad to see he is improving...hugs

Thats all good news :hap: Looks like the vet is "looking after you" ( costwise ) as well as Pippin :hap: all very encouraging.... :hap:

He hasnt said, but from what he has told me is that if left untreated could cause abcesses in the sinus cavities. It seems this is not an uncommon problem. The symptoms are a sticky brownish discharge from the cere and quite a bit of sneezing. They also rub their heads on the bars to try to relieve the pressure inside their heads.

Hopefully, this treatment will work. If not he may have to have a sinus wash. :D

Well my little baby is home. Got a call from the vet this morning to say he was ready to come home. Went to pick him up this afternoon and had to wait while he had his final dose of treatment. I could hear him tweeting from the reception area and it seemed like a lifetime until I went through to collect him.

He looks great. He has to go back on Saturday morning for a check up and I have to ring the vet in the morning with a report on how he has been since he came home.

He is happily playing with his toys and being very loud and tucking into his food. Going to let him out soon for a bit of 'out of cage time' as he hasnt had a whizz round since he went in on Friday.

Not sure he is very pleased with me, will soon find out when I let him out.

Thanks for all the messages of support, not everyone understands there is more to these little bundles of mischief than 'just a budgie'.

;)

Excellent that your vet tried a different approach to treatment and it worked! It sounds like he's doing well and I hope he continues to improve! I'm sure he's very grateful for your care, even if he's not too happy about being cooped up since Friday. *L*
