Posted August 12, 200717 yr Today we put some lino on the floor of the aviary instead of sand, the plan is that it will be easier to sweep/wipe clean that the sand was. :ausb: Let's hope it works. It's sandy coloured, and so far the birds don't seem to even care that it's there. They've already spilt their seed on it for me to clean up. :budgiedance:
August 12, 200717 yr I like the idea Bea, it should be real easy to clean with water and broom too. Let us know how it goes.
August 12, 200717 yr Author do they find it okay walking on it? Well my tame budgies walk around on the kitchen lino indoors, so i can't see it being a problem for the aviary budgies. :budgiedance:
August 12, 200717 yr Sounds like a great idea to me.... I have concrete slabs on the base of mine and once a week I sweep it out and use the back of the broom to loosen any poops, then once a month it gets brushed over with a vinegar solution and comes up sparkling :budgiedance: Feathers.

We were thinking of using concrete slabs too, but it wasn't happening fast enough for my liking, so i thought lino would be cheaper and easier, and dad would be more inclined to act quickly. :budgiedance:
August 12, 200717 yr never thought of using lino as a floor. i rent my house so i cant concrete the floor, i just use the ground with bark and sawdust from firewood cutting and lino would be much easier to keep clean
August 12, 200717 yr Did you place it on top of the sand? It is an awesome idea my concern would be dampness between the sand and the lino causing mold, algae or bacteria build up.
August 12, 200717 yr Author We did place it on top of the sand, i will keep an eye out for mould and if i notice it i will talk to dad about buying pavers to put in instead.
August 13, 200717 yr The lino sounds good but I would be looking out for moisture plus it makes it a good place for the mice to hide and breed. I have coarse river sand in my 2 outside flights and cement on my part inside flight and I really find the sand is easiest to clean, I use brush and shovel and I sweep the top layer which is seed husk and droppings and then put a little more sand down. and as for the cement one I sweep, scrup, scrap and wash. Because the birds have been sick I have been doing this everyday. BUT I don't mind as long as they get better. :fear
August 13, 200717 yr You will have problems if the birds decide to chew on it. Your Lino isnt the true natural lino from years ago that was made from natural products ...it is a vinyl flooring product and is a synthetic product made of chlorinated petrochemicals, where traditional linoleum is produced from all-natural ingredients. Vinyl flooring has health hazards as it emits vinyl chloride fumes.....these fumes are a known carcinogen ( cancer producing ) . It will also trap moisture and promote the growth of moulds. August 13, 200717 yr Author So should i just take it out then. Dad won't be happy with that, i was sure i'd seen it used before.
