August 28, 200717 yr Author Well as of first thing this morning, there are 3 chicks in the nest. They sure grow fast and the size difference between them all is quite amazing. I'm more used to baby finches and they're usually hatched within a day or so of each other so they're close in size.
August 29, 200717 yr Author This is what I saw a few minutes ago. I'm going to try and add some more shavings in soon, but so far Lucky just boots them out.
August 30, 200717 yr Author Just wondering (and I did look through the FAQs but they didn't tell me).... when do baby budgies get their first real feathers?
August 30, 200717 yr Just wondering (and I did look through the FAQs but they didn't tell me).... when do baby budgies get their first real feathers? l know that they first get their white fluffs but l'm not quite sure when, then shortly after they get their pin feather's. your bubs are so cute, they are sure growing fast.
August 30, 200717 yr The little pins you are seeing in the oldest is the start of the fluff on the body. That will come in roughly 1 week or just over. Then the other feathers start to grow in, first the tail and wing feathers then the body feathers by week 3 you should be able to see colour and by week 4 most to all of their feathers should be grown and they look like a adult bird, the only difference is their tail is short (and of cause the bars on the head). September 7, 200717 yr Author okay, time for a little update. I got around to cleaning the nest box. I was a little worried about it since I've never done it before and didn't quite know how to work it out. But I figured out a way. I got a large bowl and stuffed papertowels in it. I put the babies in there while I washed the bottom of the nest box and the sliding doors. The first baby has quite a dark coloured head. The second baby's head is yellow and third is too young yet.
September 10, 200717 yr Author No pics as the camera focussed on the wrong thing, but a little note..... First baby is going to be blue! So, now I know Lucky has some blue parentage in her background. The other two have lots of yellow on them, so I imagine they'll be greens. I think this is so interesting how this all works. The blue baby head started off a dark colour and still looks dark. I assume this is because of the barring that young budgies get. The other two with the yellow have only yellow on their heads, does that mean anything or will they get some 'bars' later yet? Edited September 10, 200717 yr by Lisachromis
September 14, 200717 yr Author Cleaned the nest again last night and took a few photos of the babies progress. Baby 1 Baby 2 Baby 3 My hands are wet in the images because I had just finished soaking off dried poop from the babies legs. Wow, just realized baby 3 doesn't look yellow in the pics and s/he is. September 18, 200717 yr The babies look great :hap: The marking on the little green opaline HEN are so clear between the wings. The little green normal HEN also is a cutie. Love skyblues too...but no front shots so cannot tell you the sex of that one
September 18, 200717 yr The chicks are normal for the parents. I don’t think your male is an Opaline, I think he is a Normal Blue Spangle, as he doesn’t have the Opaline clear Triangle on his back, but he must be split for Opaline, as you have that Opaline chick. As Spangle is Dominant you could have expected some Spangles, but just not this batch, you should get some later. Then because the mother is Opaline & the father split, the Opaline chick has the chance of being of either sex, but Kaz is guessing all are females. I wont make any guesses, but any males will be split for Opaline & also Texas Clear Body.
September 20, 200717 yr Author We had our first explorer today. The second oldest one was found on the bottom of the cage looking a little frightened so I helped it back up to the nest where she hopped back in after almost being pushed back down by Lucky who also wanted back in the nest at the same time.
