Posted August 3, 200717 yr Is it okay to feed budgies cuttlefish found directly from the beach? :fear
August 3, 200717 yr yes I believe though first you can boil it? so it is disinfected and anything buggy is killed or bacteria. I remember this question being asked a long time ago on this forum too.
August 4, 200717 yr I soak it and dry it in the sun. A lot of cuttlefish fresh from the beach stinks to high heaven, so I, for that reason, dont give it straight to the birds. Edited August 4, 200717 yr by **KAZ**
August 4, 200717 yr Soak it in clean salted water for a day and then rinse in clean water and leave in sun to dry.
August 4, 200717 yr Really fresh beach cuttlefish bone should not smell at all. If it does it has been contaminated with something. I remember picking up bags full along the beaches particularly after storms. It should not smell of anything but possibly fresh beach (a little salty, a little seaweed, maybe a little ozone). Perhaps beaches and the surrounding seas these days are not as clean as they were 30 years ago ... Pristine cuttlebone is a wonderful source of minerals for birds. Far better and nicer than the sterile rubbish dished up at pet stores and supermarkets. KathyW.

August 4, 200717 yr Author I looked back on the old posts and most of them also recommended soaking for a few days then drying so I'll give that a go. I went for a walk along a local beach yesterday in the rain and about 5 degree temp. But only found one lonely piece. Have got that soaking now and that will do "Bobby" for awhile. I will try the beach again next weekend.
