Can Budgies Live Wih Other Birds?

I have a large aviary of mixed species. I currently have 7 budgies, 2 cockateils, 4 zebra finches and 2 red rumped grass parrots. They are living happily together, and have plenty of room to fly around, and look and sound very happy. But, I have a friend who keeps telling me that I shouldn't have them all together as this will kill that, that will kill this and so on. I've housed them together for ages and haven't had trouble.

So I want the experts opinion. Can I continue to house them together, or should I seperate them? I'm currently building another aviary that the zebra finches and quail(kings) will move into, as I would like to breed zebras, but I'd like everything else to remain together. I do breed budgies every now and then, but take out a pair and place them into a smaller aviary for breeding. What do you think?

I would leave them if you're not having problems. As a general rule budgies should not be housed with other species, but it sounds like you've got a good balance in your aviary. Keep an eye out for trouble though.

Hey lullaby ! :) New member...happy to have you here.

There's the old saying you shouldn't mix straight beaked birds with hooked beak birds. There are always exceptions of course depending on the size of the space they have, the use of the aviary, the hiding places they have, and whether or not they have been raised together. Seems like your group are used to each other.

I personally wouldn't mix budgies with anything but the quail. In my husbands aviary ( we have separate aviaries ), he has mixed species...he has Princess parrots, Barraband parrots, canaries, and gouldian finches. The aviary is HUGE..........10 metres by 3 metres by 2 and a half metres tall. Planted and with lots of hidey spots. Only problem with Zebras ( we dont have any ) and some of the other finches is sometimes they decide for instance a large Parrot breeding box is the best place to raise their little brood thereby upsetting the parrots.

It seems things get tougher when various species in the aviary want to breed, and then become territorial. Birds that normally get along then dont.

In my husbands aviary, the little birds seem to bother the larger parrots only when the parrots are walking along a perch and need to step over ( or ON ) the little guys to get to where they are going. But we have had no fights. BUT again, we don't have budgies in there.

I took some great photos in there today, so I will post them later.

Cheers Karen

PS Again...happy to have you here :D

if they're happy leave them. i've got my budgies with a couple of zebras and a couple of javas and there isn't any fighting

Your aviary sounds beautiful, and I would agree with the others too, if there is no trouble then its best to leave things as they are, if you notice anything out of sorts, then will be the time to react, otherwise, enjoy! :D

Hi :)

Yeah I tried mixing Budgies and Zebras a few years back, now. I thought that they got along fine too, but......

every now and then, you'd notice a Zebbie missing a toe ... a foot.... or a whole leg :yellowhead:

So..... keep an eye on them :D

Of course people will tell you different things about various species of birds. I expect that the larger the territory availble to be shared, the better.

Just this afternoon, I've opened the divider between some of my budgies and two cockateils (so that I could add a tripple breeding box setup to the budgie side). They ain't so concerned with each other at the moment, and it's a little hard to simple tell them "all of you over that side, now".

I'll probably have to net one of the cockateils to sepparate them later. But for now they seem happy enough with the socialisation. [touch wood]

:ygbudgie: You know, I wouldn't invite trouble, I am in favour of keeping all species separate (there are exceptions) sometimes cockatiels and budgies get along and sometimes they don't. BUT IN A BREEDING SITUATION, it is not good to have the two species housed together, they don't even like their own species when they are breeding! Trial and error does not sound like a sound way to go about things! :D

Don't Panic. I've got enough cages and dividers to shuffle my budgies around as needs be. :yellowhead: Half of the budgies socialising are still juvenille, but even so, the idea of the triple breeder-box is to allow optional nesting choices and ultimately I'd probably only leave a maximum of 2 pairs together (assuming that they were okay with that). The first obvious pairing had already been removed to a designated breeding cage, and generally I don't even allow males and females together unless I'm looking for natural selection of pairs.

They cam be moodie B's though, can't they? :)

:D Very good that you have made provisions/alterations for everybody. :yellowhead:
