Some Of My New Bubs:

Featured Replies

Just wanted to share some of my new babies. The Mother is an YF2 ParBlue [maybe Violet] Spangle…Dad an Opaline Sky Blue, from YF2 parents, both Mum & Dad. This is their first batch, got three other young but not feathered much as yet, so doing well & I’m happy with the colour of these three, the two largest are very similar, the younger one is much lighter & sorry covering up one of the larger ones.

What do you think, YF2 just Cobalt or maybe Violet Opaline Spangles?

The one that has a lot of down really looks like a violet and the other one do if you had shots from the front and see the cheek patches....I bet that color will really intensify with as they grow. Keep us updated on these beauties.

The two being hidden are YF cobalt opaline spangles for sure. The colour of the cheek patch might help with working out violet or not. If they are then the violet gene is carried on the dark factor. The one on top (youngest) looks to be YF sky blue opaline spangle.

Oh wow! Those are beautiful babies. :)

Yes I agree with your idea of the colours Nerwen, I was just hoping that the two darker ones might be Violets, must look at the cheek patches like you say, keep forgetting that.

I had a disaster with this batch today, I really like the hen of this batch & she was only on her first batch & had hatched 6 & was doing such a good job. I saw her this morning, but this afternoon I went to inspect the nest & she was one of those real protective mothers that wont leave the nest & buried herself amount the babies. When I looked, my first thought was she looks dead, but then thought no she is just under the babies, but on closer inspection she was in fact stone dead. She never looked even slightly sick & was nice & fat, must have been something like heart failure, real sudden. The young still had plenty of food in their crops so I’m hoping Dad can do the job by himself, will have to keep a close watch. I can’t foster as everyone full up at the moment, as one older hen didn’t look good the other day so took her 5 young & fostered all over the place, one batch now has 8 young which I don’t like, but their own chicks are almost feathered, so it’s not like they have had 8 from the beginning. They have 6 of their own. I had high hopes for her, but now she’s gone, but hopefully I will get survival of her 6 chicks. Just one of the pitfalls of breeding, luckily it doesn’t happen every day.

Really sorry to hear about your hen Norm :ausb: I have just had a Dad that has been raising a chick alone from the age of 2 weeks, so your Dad should be fine, especially if he has soft food to make it easier to feed the little ones. Best of luck with the babies. :P

Yeah thanks Kaz he gets plenty of soft food & greens, so I hope it will be okay, but have had Dad’s that just forget about the bubs when Mum’s gone, but he was in the nest after I removed her body, so I’m hopeful & he comes from a good feeding family. The hen I bought.

I'm really sorry to hear your sad news. :(

Norm I would take the chicks out of the nest box & put them on the cage floor, the cock is more likely to feed them if they are on the floor.

Sorry to hear about your hen Norm, that has happened to me and it id heart breaking.

I agree with Macka, if their on the floor in a small nest or can or what ever the cock will see them to feed. I did that a month ago and it worked like a dream. :(

Thanks guys for thoughts & your advice, I thought about putting them out on the floor myself, but one is pretty small & I thought it might get chilled. He seems to be going in to feed them okay so far, I might be able to take the smaller one away in a few days, as have one bird just hatched one chick, but waiting till the chick gets a little bit bigger before I give it such a big nest mate. Then I might put them on the floor, as then some of the larger ones may start to feed themselves also, to ease things.

OMG... those babies are what my DREAM budgie would look like! I really want a YF blue of some sort, and spangle and opaline are my favorite color variations! I want one, I want one I want one!!! I don't suppose there's a safe (and affordable *L*) way to ship them all the way to the midwest US, is there...

But then when I read down farther and found out about their mom, oh NO!!! I really hope that dad will be able to rise to the occasion and it sounds like you have a good plan. I'm sorry that things took such a terrible turn!

And then I realize they might be even more better! YF2's! Isn't that where the yellow bleeds into the body color and makes the blues look greenish? I like those almost even better than the other kind.

Yes Armchairangel, YF2 is where the Yellow bleeds into the body colour, it usually shows up more later, when the bird gets it’s adult plumage. Yes YF2 Blue Opaline Spangle is one of my favourite colours, they are really beautiful & sorry I don’t think there is any practical way of shipping to you …(Laughing out loud)…it sure would be expensive.

I love the wing pattern on these birds that is brought about by the combination of Opaline & Spangle.

My husband also brought up the question of legality too. Phooey.

How common are birds that have these mutations together? I wish I knew of some local reputable breeders. But then again, its probably safer that I don't. *L* Too bad that we have no idea how to get ahold of the guy Jared got Baby from. I'd love to have another bird that is as hardy and friendly as she is. Often there are cool looking budgies at PetCo, but we're not going that route again. Ever.

Legally it might be possible to export to the USA from Australia, as we have a pretty disease free status compared to other parts of the world, but to do it the other way around would be impossible, we have strict quarantine regulations, they did build an expensive quarantine station in Victoria & it was expensive to bring birds in through it, but since bird flue it has been closed, but I did hear rumours that it might be opened again.

I think I have seen on here others in the USA saying that they wish they could get YF2 Opaline Spangles, but couldn’t find any, but you would think someone would have them somewhere, just the problem of finding them I guess.
