Hello everyone

THis is my first Budgie ever Billy. I would like to see if you guys the experts can tell me if (it) is a **** or hen I think it's a hen. What colors is he and what you guys think of her. Is she nice enough to breed ? thinking of starting a very small indoor aviary of only 6-8 birds...

Do you have a picture of the back of her? She looks like a yellow face dilute maybe mauve? Looks like a hen from this picture, how old is she? As for breeding what do you mean by nice?

She is a beautiful bird and to breed is a large responsibility. We have a great FAQ section about breeding before you get started and even breeding journals here on the site that you can review so you know what to expect. Breeding can be rewarding and budgie breed easily but responsible breeding it self is not simple. There are many birds out there in rescues that don't have home because so many people breed. Many thoughts to thank about and I don't want to discourage you just but facts there.

Looks like a boy to me

Really ? That's the breeder told me but I wasn't sure he knew.

The reason is beacause I bought him at the Pomona Fairplex Bird Show and there had to be like 10-15 people crowding the breeders stand when I bought him and I forgot to ask and came back a few min ltr to ask and he shouted out C*** ?

Looks like a boy to me

okay, that is cool I figured out that I can click on the picture and make it larger...with the larger picture does look boy because it is pink with no white nasal rings.

Nice enough to breed ? I wouldn't want to breed a weak (not show quality) bird. I'd rather keep him as a pet and aquire breeding pairs from a show quality breeder. I have been talking to Fred DiBernardo and so far he's my mentor. I've also read about 10 Budgie Books, Journals, Dr.Armour book & Magazines. Just wanted to see what you guys might think about this lil one.

Billy's Back

I would say he is a yellowface dilute (not clearwing because they have bright bodies with no light with almost no markings on their wings and heads).

With birds you never know unless you know at least 4 generations or even more back if they are carrying strong healthy genes. With breeding budgies a lot of it is trial and error and creating your own breeding history/journals of a particular bird or pair. So I don't think anyone here can look at your bird and say the chicks will not be weak or have genetic disorder etc...

As for show quality he looks more pet quality to my eye but we have some wonderful showers and show breeders who can answer your question.

Hope that helps

Dilutes are not a show class here in Australia, so many show breeders cull those lines. I dont know if its the same for you where you live.

Welcome to the forums! That's a gorgeous budgie you've got there. ;)

he is also spangle. Please do not let him out and about free like that outside again, even with clipped wings they can surprise you by flying some distance. If you want to give out of cage time do so inside the house.

Oh my gosh Nerwen good observation I didn't even notice that unless it was on a patio enclosed?

Yes, Billy is gorgeous!!! But seeing him outside like that made my heart ache! Not only is there the risk of him flying too far to catch him even if he is clipped, there are dangers that could get him right where he is. Wildlife predators! I have heard a story where an eagle or hawk of sorts divebombed a budgie cage with the owners sitting right there! Luckily, the cage protected the little guys. I would also imagine that a cat or dog could snap up a little birdie in the split second your head was turned if they wanted.

Budgies do love being outside, but please keep Billy safe in his cage when you bring him out!

He has such pretty coloring. It would be interesting to see what color birds he would produce. But everyone here has great advice about the responsibilities of breeding and it sounds like you're doing your research and have some help, so good luck!

Hi Cali budgie

any idea when the fairplex bird mart is again? You must be pretty close to my area (im in the SFV, west hills) That one nice looking bird you found there!!! congrats!

Oh my gosh Nerwen good observation I didn't even notice that unless it was on a patio enclosed?

I think it was only because a few days back they had a budgie on a kids TV show having a ball outside with clipped wings and I wanted to scream at the program for sending out that bad message. Not to mention the round cage they later showed the bird in. :D

But I have Gone :)

Hey thanks everyone for your advice and help. I don't think i'll be letting him out anytime soon.. I

got for my wife and also so I can learn the husbandry of the bird.. But after much research I don't think i'll be breeding him. I'd rather start from birds that have been linebreed to produce a certain look. I'll be buying pairs at the Nationals (queen mary) long beach, Ca come Oct. I'm looking for better feather quality, linebreed/inbreed from champion lineage, bigger head with a more dominant mask and a really short bill. Kinda like this beauty

I'll be sure to post them as soon as I have them...

OOhhhh...Your budgie is VERY pretty, i can tell you that. I am pretty sure that the cere looks purplish /light bluish. So, (if its young) that means its is probably (most likely) its a female. My first two budgies had ceres just like that, and that is when they were young. Now they are 1 1/2 years old and they are females. It DOES look like a yellow face diluted. I wouldn't suggest letting your budgie outside. Even is the wings are clipped (like everyone is saying). Don't be afraid to PM me if you have any other questions. I am probably not as educated as some people here, but I do know things based on personal expirience and extensive research.

(On the picture that you showed us about the ones you wanted to buy) Isn't that an English Budgie? I thought maybe because of the crown on it, the bigger head feathers. I have to agree, they are pretty!

(To Nerwen) I do that sometimes, too. There is a shop downtown, and they have a beautiful budgie in a small cage (round also). I am so tempted to go in there and tell them, but I don't like to do that (that just my personality i guess). I haven't checked in there recently, but I really hope they get that poor thing a bigger cage.

Anyway, good luck with your budgie!

Yes the budgie above is an English Budgie :ausb:

I'll be buying pairs at the Nationals (queen mary) long beach, Ca come Oct.

Hey... maybe i'll see you there! i'm going also ;)
