Posted July 18, 200718 yr Hi, I have a budgie who is approx 5-6 years old. He has been a prolific talker and is constantly chatting away especially when other people are tlaking or the radio or TV are on. Over the last week he has got quieter and quieter and now is not talking at all despite all efforts of encouragement. He seems otherwise well, is eating and drinking. There is slight molting but he is not 'puffed up' or shivery. Any ideas anyone?
July 18, 200718 yr :ausb: Wonderful he is eating and drinking, never heard of a budgie stopping talking unless they are ill. Maybe rearrange the cage and provide him with new toys for stimulation? Let's see what the other owners with "chatty" budgies say. What does he like to say the most?
July 18, 200718 yr Mine don't talk but a lack of sound/singing from them as a cause of concern anyway. How long has this being going on? Some do get a bit grumpy with a moult, has he gone quite before during a moult? An avian vet visit is always a good idea when you are all concerned with your birds health.

Yes I feel like he might be ill as he has never gone this length of time without talking. I am wondering if the cold weather has got to him a bit as it has been particularly bad here lately. I do everything to keep him warm etc and he lives in the warmest, busiest part of the house. He says a huge range of things "Its good to be home" (when I put the key in the door to come in) "Its cold outside" "Its hot in the desert" "Whose a pretty boy then" "Naughty Grandad" "Merry Chris..." (Never quite got the tmas on the end of it) "What a mess" and many many more that sometimes get mixed up!! Do wish he would cheer up! I will try rearranging things a bit
July 18, 200718 yr If you have been having up and down type of weather that concerns me Right before Pretty died he had a pretty bad molt and the weather was up and down (hot and cold) and he ended passing we think of a respiratory infection. What does your bird eat on a daily basis? Vitamin A is very important for the lining of the respiratory tract. My personal opinion even if you think he is okay is to get him to an avian vet where they can look down his throat to see if he has any spots of red, do a gram stain and do a overall physical exam.
August 5, 200718 yr Hi Bodd45 Any updates on your budgie??? As budgies are so naturally chatty I would be concerned that silence is the first symptom that something isn't quite right. I think it would be a good idea to go off to the avian vets for at least a check up. Good luck and please keep us updated.
August 18, 200718 yr Any updates? I would hate that he is ill or going deaf, he has such am impressive vocabulary.
