I wonder who is pushing HG to these prices,or is it pay the commission & it looks good on paper.

Crazy stuff…to me…my idea is that you get yourself some birds & work on them for years & feel proud that you have done something. Not just write out a cheque & hope to breed top show birds the next year. But I guess if you have so much money that spending that much for a bird mean nothing to you…it’s just a different world. Saying that I hope that some day someone might pay me that for one of my birds…(Laughing out loud).

I don't think we will get a picture Nerwen, if you paid that much for a bird you wouldn't want to risk that the flash might blind the poor thing.

Norm HG bought a bird back in the late 90s for $10,000au. He is also one of only 7 people inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame. He knows what he wants and how to use it.

He is also a very nice gentleman to know.

Back in the in the last century :glare: HG would hold his own Auctions in Vic & NSW,With about a 150 birds at each Auction. He would take home with him after the Auction, about $ 30000.00,To spend $8 or $10 thousand $. Is not a problem to HG, I say good luck & I hope he can breed a few goodens.

Are we allowed to know who HG is or are we supposed to know?

I thought every one new HG :glare: :blush:

Henry George is the mans name.& people who are

not in the show breeding seen.It wont mean a thing

to them,

There is a post that I put up in the Show Breeders section.

Let me introduce Henery to every one.

I was a very beginner and raw novist. Little over 12 months ago. (Still am a novice ;)) I was at a show in Brisbane and was being coached by the president of my club.

A nicely dressed man came a sat next to me in the open section. He first asked if the seat was free. It was as the president had gone to get a drink. He asked if I had any birds in the show. I told him that I had just started breeding and hadn't started to show yet. He asked what Club I was in and I told him PRBS. He siad it was a good club and that the members would help me. I asked if he had many birds in the show, he said he had a few. I asked how he thought they would go. He said he wasn't sure and we would see. I thought he was a gentle man and was interested in his name. Before I had a chance to ask the presedient came back and said "Oh Darryl I see you've met Henery George." I had heard about Henry and it was a pleasure to meet him.

Henry had over 30 birds in the show and if they didn't win they came 2nd. I found Henry to be honest and down to earth, He help me with some tips. Every time I have run into Henry, be it at his Avery or at a show, I have found him to be a true Gentleman. I have known Henry over 12 months now as an aquantance and he has always been the same.

I have found many like Henry in the fancy. Gerald Binks and Jeff Attwood to be the same. As many in Australia. It is truely a great fancy to be proud of.

Hello to all . I went to the auction and purchased to nice cobalts myself . to give you a run down there were 3 birds that sold for $4ooo dollars , 2 from the gazzard stud and one from the darman stud the Darman stud bird was a 3 time grand champion. 2 birds went for $3000 dollars also from the Darman stud and the welshman stud . Ive now been twice to this auction and it still amazes me and is a great day even if you arent looking to buy any birds . I would average the price per bird out of 246 lots to be approx $500 dollars per bird, many birds went over $1000 dollars, but in saying that there was also some good buys . Birds came from all over australia from WA to Queensland and victoria . Belive me its worth a look , will be there next year. ;)

Can I put forward a view......

If some one had the National Winner... why would he sell it??

If I had the national winner I would only sell it if...

1. It wouldn't breed.

2. The offspring wasn't good..

3. There was a problem with it...

In two weeks time there is a bird in the Brisbane auction that is a Gazzard Bird. 06 rung that is being sold by another breeder... why???!

Wow I tell you one thing that bird would be treated like gold and you imagine if anything happened to it. Very interesting info here.

Hi daz the grand champ was an 04 bird my thoughts is Joe Darman has bred from him and has his offspring and is now using them and can also make some money also , On a sad note his wife recently passed away , a beautiful woman and an avid budgie breeder , maybe this had a part to play .

On the Gazzard bird maybe the buyer is going to try to make a profit from the bird or yes maybe there is something wrong with it , all budgies are a gamble when trying to breed the grand champ its like a needle in the haystack sometimes it pays off. ;)

Hi Elly these birds dont live in an avairy up the back they are in avaries constuucted like houses with heating and air con and all the creature comforts , ive been to some avaires that are more like hospitals with hygene the top consideration. :D

I was at a Auction today, here in Vic,There was a opline/albino put up in the Auction. In the comments collum.

It said ,grandson of the $5000.00 albino cock. :D It made $30.00,Now there is no way of proveing if it was, indeed the grandson of that cock. The breeder was from NSW.He had 12 birds in the Auction,& off the top of my head only 1 made over $50.00. it made $220,

The moral to this story, just because its related to an expencive bird,if it dosent look the part,

they sell for peanuts. ;)

I saw recently that Darman’s live near to where my daughter lives & had some mutations that I’m interested in & was going to contact them when I was going down. Looks like they might be too expensive for me.

Norm I think that you can get some good bird at good prices from any Breeder. You will have to pay a bit more for some of the really good birds, but you really need to start off small.

I bought three birds for $30 ea and two have been a great start to my stud.

Hi - I recently visited Joe Darman at his house and viewed the birds prior to being sold at the auction. The 2 Grey Green cocks were exceptional birds and in Joe's words. "I have had some good years out of them and enough sons and daughters to allow someone else a chance.

A comment I would like to state is that a bird is worth what some one is willing to pay for it. Some people have different values.

Yes - Joes wife passed away less than 3 months ago and both are true fanciers and the nicest people I have ever met..

Kruger, what is it about. The Hills auction that there is so many, bird that sell for those prices. No dought

they are good birds. But we never get near. Those prices, here in Vic,& we have some good breeders, that sell birds & we dont get within a bulls roar of those prices,Perhaps we have to deep of pockets& no big spenders. -_-

Macka,

I think a couple of personalities have a lot to do with the prices in Sydney. One such individual sits at the auction and when the bird he likes comes up he just holds his ticket up until he reaches his price. This could be more than a monthly salary for some and he could purchase 4 or 5 birds in one auction. I saw one young bird he purchased at hills last year for $2700 get sold for approx $700 over a tme frame of less than 12 months later.

Also people sell birds at these auctions that are not surplus birds but good birds which they believe they will get more than their worth.

Quick cash.

to see the birds go to the Hills auction website, photos in the catalogue of the birds discussed.

Bye.

The next big auction is the BRASEA Action here in Brisbane. http://www.brasea.com/bba.html I think there are too many birds in this one. There is an 06 Gazzard Bird late in the day. Lot 327. I wonder if it will keep the punters there. 345 birds is a long day.

Daz, that is the number of birds in a BRASEA Auction.I have been to 2 in Sydney & they were both over

300 birds. It depends on the auctioneer. If he keeps it rolling.I would think it would be finished by 1600.

I don`t think there will be many lots over the 3000.00 mark. :)

  • 8 months later...

The Hills Auction have always historically had some of the best quality birds in Australia up for grads!

Not surprising Mr George picked that Auction to choose his next out cross.

Haven't been since the 90's when a lot of 100% import birds went up for sale.

Looking forward to this years event!!

Are you guys kidding $4,000.00

that is 4 thousand dollars for a bird ...

O M G

That is almost a good car ?????

4 g's for a bird now call me Niaeve (sp) but apart form ribbons and self satisfaction joy and etc

what do you get from show breeding - I can't justify spending $100 on a bird let alone $4,000 ..... Please do not take this the wrong way - I would like to know though
