Posted July 6, 200717 yr Sorry for having so many questions. I'm really new to this, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can! Okay, from what I know, the Female will have the egg in her for awhile and then lay it. I said before that my female does not go in the nest often anymore. And another person said that when she goes in alot she could have the egg in her and she would have a bump in the tail area. Is it easy to tell if there is an egg there? I took some pictures. she may be out of condition but I don't know for sure yet. they still sit on top of the nest box ALOT. Here are some pictures, if you can tell by them, if the bump is there. Sorry again for so many questions! :budgiedance:
July 6, 200717 yr It’s hard to tell from a photo like that but it doesn’t look as if she has a swollen vent. If when you put a pair to breed together & place the nest box in, the pair is ready to breed, mostly it will happen in 10 to 14 days. The pair will look interested in each other & the nest, the hen will start going in the nest & if all is right this will increase, until she is spending more time in the nest & less out. The cock will become very attentive & feed her most of the time, she comes out. Then just a few days before the egg is laid, the hens vent area under the tail will swell, so that you can see an area of skin. If all is well she will soon lay an egg, then another every second day until her clutch size is reach, normally 6, but sometime more or even less. I have had hens that the area swells, but even in months no egg arrives, I think in these cases something is wrong with the hen inside. Some pairs don’t seem interested in each other & this process doesn’t happen. Maybe they just don’t like each other or something else is wrong. You can try them with a different mate & it may work. But in rare cases something is wrong with the hen & she could possibly never breed. Usually if the cock is infertile or something wrong with him, the hen will still lay eggs, but they will never hatch.

Oh okay, well my Hen a couple days ago would spend most her time in the nest, every time I went in my room she was inside of the box. But a couple day ago she just began to not go in it as much, she still sits outside of it alot, and the male acually looks inside of it ALOT. I would not think that they don't like eachother. everytime I take them out of the cage, and If I were to take one to another room, they would both squack to eachother and try to hear eachother, and inside the cage they do pretty much everything together. Eat together, play with the miror and stuff like that. I'm not really sure. It's so confusing :budgiedance:
July 6, 200717 yr you could have just missed her breeding cycle. They might be 'starting' again so to speak. Is the male feeding and wooing her? or do they ignore each other? I can't tell from the pictures about her, I can't even see the cere colour, it is brown, tan, blue or white? Also that is a VERY big looking nest box for them, and they don't even have something to stand on at the nest hole. I can see that it looks like there might be a wooden dowel stick in the hole, is it still inside the nest? if so push it through the hole so it is sticking outside as a branch just in front of the entry hole. The boxes get transported an stored like that so they don't break.
July 6, 200717 yr Your right Nerwen, that could be the case, they might not be happy if there’s a dowel sticking through the middle of their nest. I don’t think the size of the nest would bother them, as I think they like big nests, I have one pair in an aviary that has taken over a Cockatiels nest & that nest is a full bee hive box, they have raised two batches already in it. I don’t have much experience with breeding with tame Budgies, 2Budgieowner says every time I take her out of the cage, could that be the problem, maybe they should be left till at least she has eggs, before regularly taking them out. July 6, 200717 yr Oh okay, well I got the box at a pet store and it said it was for parakeets, I may go looking for another one after awhile, and I will push the stick through. Well her cere was kind of like a crusty brown, but it is starting to go away. If she is going past her breeding cycle, when will the next one come?
July 6, 200717 yr I wasn't worried about the size of the box, just looking at the way they had to get in by jumping/flying from the other perch. The cycle length depends on each bird, sometimes it will only take about a month for others 6 months.
