How Do I Fatten Up My New Budgies?

Featured Replies

Yesterday I was given three beautiful 6 week old babies, two from the same clutch. On inspecting them I found the two of them to be very underweight. as they are only 6 weeks old I'd like to get them in top condition whilst they are in quarenteen before placing them in the main aviary. Suggestions?

It seems these baby budgies were not properly independant of their own parents and eating well enough on their own before you became their new owner. Some baby budgies are not ready for new homes at 6 weeks. Try them with a really good homemade eggfood with vegies in it and check them to be sure they ARE eating and that they havent pooey bottoms. Weigh them every day.

They are definately eating independantly, and Dad stopped feeding them a week or so ago. I have got the eggs boiling to make eggfood already :) I thought about adding a little HR mix as well, but wasnt sure whether that would add anything nutritious?

Could it be they are underweight because Mum and Dad have started clutch no.2 and these babies are suffering because of that?

Patches see if you can get some Budgie Starter. Soak 1/4 cup hulled oats over night or 24 hours. Drain and add a 1/4 budgie starter. Give that to them that will help build them up.

I soak my oats in hot water with avicleans in it to stop bacteria.
