Posted January 2, 200520 yr Hi guys! you see im kinda with all this budgie stuff, but anyways how do you know if a budgie is pregnant? help please! Edited January 6, 200520 yr by Abs_Crazy
January 6, 200520 yr Hi there budgies dont actually get pregnant like humans they lay eggs which are fertalised during mating of a male and female budgie, Let me explaine for a egg to become fertilised that is one that could hatch into a budgie chick the **** and hen need to mate to fertilise the egg . A hen budgie is capable of laying eggs without a **** bird around. Firsly the birds need to be in breeding condition you can tell this by the birds behaviour and cere colour, The hen will be knawing at every thing and looking for a nest box which you must provide for her to lay her eggs also her cere the area above her beak will be a thocolate brown or coffee colour. The male bird will be feeding her and bobbing up and down to her in a courtship behaviour also his cere will be bright blue. You may observe him trying to climb on her back to mate but this dosen,t always happen in you presence. When the birds have mated the hen will retreat to the nest box to lay her eggs you will notice an enlargement to her abdomen just below her vent, This is the area just below her anus. Once she starts to lay after acouple of days once you have say 3 eggs check to see if any have turned white in appearance this is a goo d indication that the eggs are fertile this means that the eggs should hatch after 18 days incubation, Good luck and leave well alone dont keep handeling the eggs as this can cause contamination which means that you could harm the developing embryos, most budgies are good mothers and i have found that it is best to leave it up to mother nature good luck GILL.
January 6, 200520 yr Thanks gillian, i know it was alittle stupid to ask that but this is my first time with birds. About the cere, before it was brown and now its turning blue. Is that strange or is it normal?
January 6, 200520 yr Sometimes a budgies cere will change colour, A male budgies cere will often change to a pale blue or even pinkish brown if he is old or ill. With a hen it is a sign that she is out of condition, and sometimes i find that the cere has become crusty and it can flake like dried skin,This can make it change colour usually it will be lighter than normal,As for turning blue i must say i havn,t come across that. A pinkish purple may be. Hope this helps. JILL.
January 7, 200520 yr maybe its a male  ive got one with a blue cere but around the nostrils it changes to a very light brown  post a picture and we can tell u what it is
January 7, 200520 yr How old is youre bird? Young birds ceres can change as they develope also some pied birds cere will be a different shade to a normal. Jill. :bluebudgie:
January 7, 200520 yr I dont know cos i wasnt the one who bought it my cousin did and she said they didnt tell her how old they were, they bought them at a pet shop.
January 7, 200520 yr my female budgie has a white cere most of the time... even when she was laying and mating....i always thought she was a he as it was more like a pale blue but we could never actually make up our minds until she started mating.... now we have the babys to prove it though haha. all of our other girls are very brown but she is the exception. she a pale blue budgie, so i cant even say albino caused the strangeness of it... i dont know.
January 8, 200520 yr Hath, Â If they are pale blue what action would you take to get them 'in condition'? Is it a matter of good food and waiting? How long would they be out of condition? Â Thanks, Â Chris
January 8, 200520 yr Good question nlpmaster. I got a little camara its called slim shot, I hope i can use it to take a picture and post it up for you guys to see Lili ( female budgie) Edited January 8, 200520 yr by Abs_Crazy
January 8, 200520 yr yay cant wait.. Â as for the white cere, mine have that after they have mated and are laying on eggs... it doesnt stay white for long though... Â its like a indication that she may be ready for breeding when it goes back to a light brown colour if the requirements are met
January 8, 200520 yr to bring them into condition i extend the amount of light in my birdroom and turn the heating on so that it is between 10 and 15 degrees ensre water and seed is always available and it takes about 4 to 6 weeks to bring them into condition
January 8, 200520 yr forgot to say extend the light to 10 to 12 hours, i start to get mine in condition to breed around the middle to the end of november
