New To This! Budgies And 6 Eggs

Featured Replies

It was an experiment I had 2 females and one male. Now I have one hatched and five more eggs to go. I give them a mineral block, vitamins in the water, oyster shells(they never touch) and cuttlebones. I use a premium food that has eggplant and fruit and vegtables and different seeds..Wondering if this is enough?? Hoping so, I don't want to spend too much time with this, hand feeding is not an entertaining idea for me, have a cat as well, always hanging off the cage...but anyways....I have built them a 3 and 1/2 foot long cage that is 2 feet high and 14 inches wide, it seems big enough. Wondering at what age can I give them away??? What problems I might encounter?? The chances of problems, not prepared to deal with splayed legs, jeez I hope they all will get enough food.....The breeding pair were very young probably around 10 months old, a blue regular and an all yellow special, wondering what I will get??

What should I expect here??? With all this could someone give me some advice and personal experience......Just hope she will raise them, though the male goes in the nest by himself at times too, just hope they grow and I can give them away, what does everybody think????

Well for started you were every lucky the Hens didn't try and kill each other. Unless they are separated and you just moved the male to each cage.

Mineral block - good.

Vitamins - what sort?

Oyster shells - get rid of them

cuttle bones - good.

A good quality seed is the best to feed them. Try offering soft foods such as sprouts, mashed boiled eggs and grated carrot, corn and other healthy veggies. Even if your birds haven't touched this before i find as parents they love anything easy to digest and feed bubs. You can also get some egg and biscuit mix to give.

They will need to stay with the parent for around 6 weeks and then you should keep them until you know they are feeding themselves before giving them away as pets. There are many problems that can arise with breding some unexpected. One thing that can help prevent splay legs is a good bedding in the nest box, wood shavings/sawdust works well and I have heard of people using cat litter as well.

not sure what you mean by " all yellow special". There are a couple of mutation that can give a all yellow bird. However the most know is Lutino which has red eyes. The babies will be all Green normals Unless unknown gene that the parent birds are carrying appear. If the Hen is carrying a blue gene you might get some blue birds as well.

Not ever having used one male to two hens I'm not sure how the extra work load will affect him. Hen can raise a clutch on they own if need be. I would recommend you stop them both at one clutch each. Sometimes the males help with the feeding from the first day others do not do much at all. If the hen allows it then they enter the box along with her for feeding and even brooding.

How many eggs have you got waiting to hatch?

Also have a read through the FAQ system for helpful tips. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...tion=show&cat=7

5 eggs left to hatch, and it is a liquid bird vitamin that I add to the water..what is egg and biscuit mix???

all my birds seem to get along, one cage 2 breeding nests and one male, only one female has laid eggs, I got the second female because she had a really dark cere and the other wasn't breeding and the cere was almost white, it didn't change until the other female laid eggs, now it is dark brown.
