Venturing Out Too Early...?

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering, when your budgies are breeding, do the bubs ever venture out too early? like before theyre completely covered in feathers, at about three to four weeks old??? Cause mine do and they seem to do it all the time, not just with one set of parents... Its not a real problem, but I was just curious to know whether its normal or mine are just a bit weird.

I've had it happen a few times, but not very often. As long as they are not being deliberately evicted you could try putting them back. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I guess it depends on whether the escapee got too excited/anxious/eager to be fed and accidentally fell out or got pushed out by siblings trying to get to the parent at the nest hole ... or got too curious about the world outside. If the latter it'll be out again most likely in short order. The parents will feed them on the floor if they're good parents.

Yes Like Kathy I've had one out and looking about a bit too early. I pop them back if the look like they are trying to get back in and at night time.

With mine, once they start coming out they are out usually once a day, the parents dont usually feed them outside the box, but then again they are never out for long because I put them back in... I think they might try to follow the parents out after being fed, but im not entirely sure...

Mine sometimes tumble out when clambering to get to the food source first. :D I just pop them back in the box when this happens.

The problem is your nest boxs, are not deep enough. My boxes are 175 mm sq & 175mm from the bottem of the box to the pop hole.A icecream container sit inside the nest box,to hold the nesting material. It also helps keep the nests clean, as you can lift out the container out & put a fresh one back.My nest boxes hang on the outside of the breeding box, make it easy to check inside the nest. :D

Well, turns out it was a bit of a problem... I found one of the bubs this morning somehow lodged between the back of the cage and the breeding box... I have no idea how he got there as the gap between them is no bigger than a centimeter, but he somehow managed it and unfortunately didnt make it. The poor little guy. The one night I dont check on them before bed something like this happens! :D

Oh well, thanks for your feedback anyway guys.

Sorry to hear of your loss Shann.

We all have things like that happen. The thing to do is learn from it and take steps if possible to not to make the same mistakes twice. Chalk it up to "experience" and move on, but don't ever forget ...

As Macka Said you need a deep nest box to keep them in longer.

Deep enough so they don't get out when you look.

Deep enough so they don't get out the hole too early.

I place a 35 mm block with a 20 mm concave. (Not shown)
