Posted January 2, 200520 yr Hi everyone! I have a problem, you see we were cutting our budgies feathers and one wing started bleeding, my parents say it will heel but im not very sure can any1 help me! Edited January 4, 200520 yr by Abs_Crazy
January 2, 200520 yr hi abs, if you didnt know what you were doing why didnt you get a vet to do it? it is not expensive. I personally would never clip my budgies wings on my own, i would rather a professional did it as cutting a blood feather can be very dangerous for a little bird.
January 2, 200520 yr I didnt do it my grandma did but the budgie looks quite better now.how much does it cost to take it to the vets?
January 2, 200520 yr not much at all. i had to take my budgie to the vet 2 weeks ago and she gave him some antibiotics and stuff and it was only 13pounds. i havent had his wings clipped yet, but i should imagine it wouldnt be much more than this. you could always ring your local vets surgery and ask glad your little friend is looking better. keep an eye on it though cuz you wouldnt want it to get infected or anything.
January 2, 200520 yr well vets are kind of expensive at least here in spain but its MUCH better for your bird.If you cut too many feathers the budgie will feel weird and he actually starts biting his own wing (dont ask me why that's what my vet told me when i took my budgie to clip his wings) also if you cut them up to a certain point the feathers will never grow back. I dont think they should bleed when you clip their wings cuz its kinda like when we cut our hair, in any case if he doesnt get much better i would take him to a vet just to make sure everythings fine
January 2, 200520 yr I dont think they should bleed when you clip their wings cuz its kinda like when we cut our hair sorry its nothing like cutting hair a bird can bleed to death if the wings are cut to short
January 2, 200520 yr Yeah well i guess it was because they were cut to short but we immediately put a cloth over it and it stoped bleeding in about 2 minutes but im still checking up on him to see if he's okay.
January 3, 200520 yr wow we've always done our own cos its 11$ US to clip TOENAILS. i cant imagine what it would be to trim wings! augh. there was a special budgie edition of BirdTalk Magazine that went into depth about trimming wings. i dont know if BirdTalk is sold in the UK or Europe though... im sure there's a website somewhere that will explain it very well. we had the petshop people do it and explain it to us one time and then my mum and i do it (most fo mine wiggle a LOT)
January 3, 200520 yr There are two dangers with clipping too short-one as you've found out is bleeding but it sounds as if that has stopped now but you MUST keep and eye on him for infection. I have been told that you can dilute a few drops of TCP with approx 20mls water and dab wound with that. I have used it to spray my birds head when the other caused a slight wound and it kept it clean. Julie
January 3, 200520 yr TCP is the liquid antiseptic that humans can use-you get it from anywhere-chemists,supermarkets etc. Obviously it would be better to use some antiseptic from a pet shop if you're out and about.I sugggested the tcp in case you just needed something in a hurry and couldn't get to a pet store e.g. Good Luck Julie
January 4, 200520 yr I've never clipped my boys wings, but they are very used to me holding them and checking there wings, feet and overall condition. Claire xXx
