Buying A Second Hand Aviary

Featured Replies

Hi everyone :D

I'm looking for a second hand aviary to buy for my budgies. Thinking it over I'm a bit scared to go second hand incase the aviary contains bacteria that will make my budgies sick.

Is there anything I can clean it out with to make sure it'll be okay? Or should I really look at new?

Thanks

Michelle

A lot of us on here have bought second hand aviaries. There are many ways to clean an aviary to rid it of germs. Most people wash them down with a vinegar solution and there is a disinfectant safe for birds called Vikron. You can also use avian liquid insecticide for any other bugs. Replace all perches if any come with it.

You may as well save some costs where you can. We got a brilliant aviary for Feathers..check hers out. Cheap as.... :rip:

dont forget to check aviaries on ebay in your nearby area too

Thanks Kaz - I appreciate your help - as always :P - just looking at prices of aviaries - $400 +

Hubby is very happy to hear that too :)

There is nothing wrong with a second hand aviary as Kas said you just need to clean it wash it with a bacteria wash and as Kas said Vinigar is a great one and cheap. I also you domestos, a small amount to a bucket of water to wash down my aviary. I use it to wash everything, including drinkers and feed bowls. But I also rinse it off. :hap:

Back to the second Aviary, I see quite a few of them in Brisbane area on ebay,

Good luck with your search memonty :rip:

Just one thing about second hand aviary though, as great as they are as I scored myself an awesome second hand aviary from Paul, you just have to make sure you find out why they are selling the aviary to start off with. I would seriously think about an aviary that's up for sell because all the birds had died and they don't want to start again. you never know what killed it, and even so, so things that kills bird, stays in the environment for awhile (eg PBFD), even if you disinfect the aviary, it doenst kill off the virus that cause PBFD in birds, as they are no cure for it, and you seriously need to do alot of bleaching and testing to make sure that it's clean. If they are however just expending or downsizing, and they seems to have a healthy flock, then I see absolutely no reason why you wouldn't buy a second hand aviary. Good luck!!

If you can get F10 avian disinfectant, it would be handy. You might have to try a vet.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Kaz that aviary is awesome. Mine has to be less than 3m long / wide otherwise I believe I have to apply for council approval. I only have 20 budgies and when my babies are gone only about 16 so I don't need anything too big at all.

I'm just looking for a normal absco type aviary for about $100 - $200 second hand.

Something like this one - The first or second from the top

There is a few good deals on ebay right now, so do a search and keep checking back to see what has been added and look for ones near to you for collection. Check your local trade papers too for any.
