Broken Leg

Featured Replies

I had a friend whose budgie had a broken leg once, the vet used a toothpick split down the middle to splint it so I imagine the vet would do something similar (if not with a toothpick.) As far as I can tell just keep the little guy warm and in the dark, just like what youre doing. GOOD LUCK, Im sure he'll be right.

:) And again, take comfort in the fact that if his leg doesn't heal in the correct anatomical position (they are so small and with all the movement), he will be fine. We have had tons of birds at the wildlife shelter with broken legs but they adapt and can get around. The only exceptions are the woodpeckers who need both feet to hang from trees. :)

We have a tame male Rosella with only one leg, and I've seen a wild female (Rosella) with only one leg too (not genetic .. just accidents). The wild one always hangs around with her mate. They cope and do so quite well.

I'm sure Yumi will be fine. He's young, he should heal well. And he is such a cutie! I'll bet he will get even more pampered than he was before his accident. No matter how straight or crooked his leg heals I'm sure you'll love him the same and he will still be the same little Yumi inside :-)

Cheers,

lovely comments everyone - thanks :ausb:

a quick update...

Yumi is noticably perkier today :). He's chirping and moving around okay (mostly). He seems to be adapting to his splint quite well. Im sure he'll make it through the next two weeks better than I will. He's had a little pick at his bandage but I dont think he'll manage to get it off, it looks like the vet has seen this before and perhaps why he made the splint so big with the ends folded around the bottom - he has merely began to unstick this fold - he did have some bandage 'sticky' stuck to his face today which looked cute.

He seems quite tired in the evenings and I guess that is understandable as (someone else mentioned also) he is carrying that heavy thing around all day. He reminds me of a peg leg pirate as he moves along his perch making a 'tap tap' as he steps - so he sounds authentic too.

Hopefully now it will just be an update when the splint comes off ... fingers crossed! Thanks again for helping me thru - its good to hear that others have experienced the same thing with positive results!

wonderful to hear that he is progressing well :P

So pleased to hear that Yumi is perkier - it is such a relief when they start singing and moving around again, isn't it. Hope the two weeks fly by so he can be free of his peg leg!

Hello everyone! Yumi gets his splint off at 5pm today!! Although he nearly has it off himself haha little monkey...

Hopefully everything will be fine as he is moving his leg pretty well and really yanking on that bandage...I'll let you know tomorrow how he is :)

Good stuff. Look forward to seeing him get around without the splint. :)

:) Great News!!! :)

Yumi is doing great!! I will post some pics later but basically he was a good boy at the vet and his splint came off without too much trouble. He has a lump where the break was but the vet said it had healed well and will probably straighten a bit more as he uses it more (i'm happy with how it has healed - a slight bend but Yumi wont care).

Apparently he will have some pins and needles for a day and then he'll start to use it more. He was gripping his perch quite well last night though, but was quiet and sleepy after his ordeal.

He is great this morning!

Thanks again everyone for everything... I'll have to get a cute picture for the budgie of the month comp, I look forward to seeing all of your little babies there too.

take care until next time...

Lots of love,

Mandi & Yumi :D

My gosh is it 2 weeks already?!?!?!?

So very pleased to hear about Yumi's progress and looking forward to pics :-)

Yes! the two weeks did go quite fast. Here are a couple of pics of Yumi's wonky leg. The vet said the lump will get less as he gets older. He said there will always be a slight bump but nothing to worry about.

The little budgie in the forum banner - the yellowhead on the right reminds me of Yumi - he/she is beautiful. It looks like one of Kaz's flock - am I right.

Also Elly - sorry to hear that Pretty is no longer with you. I have often admired that lovely little face :P

Cant wait to see the bugie of the month

I forgot to mention that! Inside the bandage was a paper clip, bent to suit the needs of the splint, that is also what made the peg leg noise when he hopped around.

Great his leg is better :P

He is handsome - I have a female who looks just like him :)
