Thick Cere

Featured Replies

This is difficult to word as I'm not sure what I'm talking about! My nana's budgie's cere is thickened at the bottom of it, I can see her cere is a brown colour at the top but then there is a build up of the skin (? is it skin?) covering most of her cere maybe about 0.3-0.4cm thick. She only eats seed, every time I go to my nana's I put a piece of fruit or vegetable in the cage but my nana keeps forgetting to do this every day. I think she just doesn't think that her bird will eat it so my nana just doesn't bother to try unfortunately.

Could it be down to Beauty the budgie's diet or could it be more of a health problem?

Beauty isn't affected by it, its not irritating her and shes just her normal self. I don't know a lot about budgies but my budgie's ceres are a uniform thickness and seem to shed in layers, unlike Beauty. We're not sure of Beauty's age but I think she could be over six years old.

Nash86...I'm sorry your picture doesn't seem to be working...hard to say anything without it.

I haven't added a picture, sorry I should have said I don't have a picture.

there was a link to photobucket, but now it's gone...pretty hard for us to help you with this sort of question without a picture.

That was in my signature it wasn't related to the post :P ??

If it's scaley face it's usually whitish in colour and looks a bit warty, with little holes all through it (some graphic photos here).

If it's not warty, it could be normal - some hens seem to develop more prominent ceres especially when in breeding condition.

If it's too prominent it could be something called "hyperkeratosis" (more info here.)

If it's scaley face it is easily treated. If it's not scaley, and she is otherwise well, at 6 years old I'd leave her be - "if it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it!" or you may cause more harm than good.

Getting a photo of her up would help thou.

Cheers,

KathyW.
