Posted June 16, 200718 yr :grbud: Id like to put it to all the cage breeders out there, do you have your cocks and hens seperated , (In seperate flights ) or do you have them all mixed. I have now tried both ways and Im now leaning back to having them seperate. Would like some other breeders views..
June 16, 200718 yr I have mixed flights. In talking with other show breeders who have tried separating the sexes, they say that sometimes there is trouble mating birds that have not experienced sexual or courting behaviour in the flights. I think the heightened activity in the flights from budgies of both sexes trying to impress each other adds to their exercise as they fly around in courting displays. Hens all together snipe at each other and seem so "grumpy" in comparison to the added interest they all show when in a mixed flight. But...each to their own. I am sure there are good reasons for both sides of the debate. :grbud:
June 16, 200718 yr I have them separated. I am thinking of puting them back togeather after the breeding season next year but will wait and see. I have three main flights, Cocks, Hens, Young and a nursary cage.
June 17, 200718 yr Dear friends there was a time when we used to keep both sexes seperately, but practically it proved that if we keep female and male seperate, hen put weight on them and then give prblem during breeding season. what i do is to seperate them just 15 days before my breeding season so i do not get confusion on who is the father of chick and my hens fit well because they fly too much when male chase them and so in result no extra fat on body. regards Naveed
June 17, 200718 yr Exhibitionbudgie is right. I devide them up a few months going into breeding and then bring them back togeather. With the cocks chasing the hens they do keep fitter.
June 17, 200718 yr I have 4 flight.I run the hens & cocks together.1 flight has last year birds, the next has the year before birds.& the 3rd has the old birds & ones that have been used,or did`nt preform. The 4th flight has this years early hatch in there,6 early cocks & hens will get a run in November to 6 of both older birds for Xmas,New Year hatching.I have never run the sexes seperate & I have been happy with my results.
June 17, 200718 yr I use multiple flights for keeping "very young" birds sepearate then matured, or you can say i keep my breeding team seperate then the youngsters. The birds which i need to cull i prefer to keep them in seperate cage of reasonable size so any one can pick thr choice from them.
June 17, 200718 yr well that makes sense Mine are all together and since I don't have room in my area for another flight cage it is going to stay that way.
June 18, 200718 yr thanks for the imput , i think i will try spliting them up previous to pairing , have never tried it . ive had some trouble breaking some pairings before and you always seem to loose time when you put them down and some are reluctent to pair up . very frustrating
June 19, 200718 yr Hi Exceptions are thr but i never face a major problem breaking up for 15 days. regards
June 19, 200718 yr I have my birds mixed all year but seperate them 3 weeks before I put them down. I am happy with how my birds are breeding. My hens are constantly flying around as they can see the cock birds in the other flight. I have a nursery & flight for the babies. Everyone has their own ideas. :rip:
