I was wondering what other birds can be safely housed with budgies aside from more budgies. I was thinking cockatiels as I have seen in members sigs that they have them together yet I saw this

At the moment in our holding aviary we have with our cockatiels, king parrots and princess parrots.

These mix quite well, but not all birds are compatible. I would never put budgerigars or lovebirds in with cockatiels, I have seen cockatiels with toes missing as a result of putting these birds together

from the Australian National Cockatiel Society so now I have no idea. I was thinking of cockatiels as I thought hand tamed ones would be nice for my 5 yr old as my budgies are totaly antisocial, and they are much smaller than a Cocky which is what he wants. (He thinks the crests are great ) Any advice would be appreciated.

For some people, cockatiels and budgies can be housed together if they have a very, very large area. I would be leary of it but it does work sometimes. NEVER, ever put lovebirds in with anybody other than lovebirds (and even then they may not always get along). :parrot:

I've got tiels and budgies but they live separately. They can usually come out for play time together though, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem as long as you have somewhere for a nice large cage for a tiel. I think a handreared baby tiel would be wonderful if you trained it around kids. My neighbours have one and their 5 and 9 year old daughters love it and are always playing with it.

It's never a good idea to mix parrot species in a cage. It sometimes works if you have a very large outdoor aviary. Budgies can be extremely territorial and aggressive toward other birds, especially those that are more docile in nature such as cockatiels. On the other hand, larger birds have larger beaks and can do serious harm to budgies. The risk of these problems is increased if you have birds that are nesting. If you are still planning on trying to mix two different parrot species, please be prepared to house them separately if it doesn't work out.

Yep I was already aware of the charming nature of lovebirds. I kept a pair a while back, but thanks for the reminder.

I wouldn't go smaller than a 18"h x 18"d x 30"w flight cage. They're available almost anywhere in Australia for pretty cheap. Even better would be the size up which is 18"d x 36"h x 30"w (that's the size i have my two tiels in).

I house Bourkes with my budgies without any trouble. although you need to be careful to give them a whole day of daylight to get used to each other.

Bourkes stay active well after dark & budgies may take a day or two to get used to the noise around sleep time.

 

Again like Tiels you need a good size avery. I have 5 Bourkes with 14 budgies.

 

I did house Tiels with my budgies but after I obtained a third tiel I thought they were picking on each other so I seperated them.

Well hopefully next month I will have the cash to get my new cage. It will be 178cm(70")h x 100cm(40")w x 60cm(24")d. It will have 4 budgies(Maybe 6.My local breeder has some beaut clearwing spangles ) in it for sure. I gather this would be too small to add 1 or 2 tiels to ?

 

Anyway thanks for all the tips. Now I just have to let the family know that we need a second cage if we want any 'tiels

I work at a bird sanctuary, and we have 2 tiels housed with 7 budgies. It's a pretty large flight cage and they all get along just fine. We also actually have a budgie and lovebird who are completely bonded with one another. They've lived together in the same cage for the past 10 years. But they are probably the exception to the rule.
